Q: A lump in the breast:

Hi Kim, My 37 yr old daughter ** who is single ... has a lump in her breast. She does not have insurance & has not had it biopsy'd. What do you suggest that she could do to stop its growth, etc? ET, Pau de Arco, etc?

Ans:

Which breast, which daughter?? Emotional issues are usually huge in breast cancer; left breast usually lack of mercy, especially for oneself, right breast lack of "judgement" or appropriate boundaries in relation to other people.

Lymphatic masssage is crucial in underarm area with a mix of guardian (NSP #3922-9) and lemon (NSP #3908-2) oils. Warm castor oil packs over the area will help to break it down. Una de gato (NSP#175-0) , bp-x (NSP #803-2) and lymphomax (NSP #4077-6) would be good starters in addition to pau d'arco.

Best wishes.

Kim

Q: Intestinal bleeding

Ans:

April 30, 1996

Dear ** & **,

In reference to the message regarding your nephew that has intestinal bleeding, I spoke with Kim about this and the following is what she recommended:

1. No meat or sugar, since they increase acidity and irritate the tissues.
2. UC-C (NSP #1880-8). To strenthen and heal intestinal tract.
3. Slippery Elm (bulk) (NSP #1391-2). Coats the intestines.
4. Chewable Bifidophilus (NSP #3302-0), OR EVEN BETTER, mix together Flora Force (NSP #4080-4) (opened)
Whole Milk Yogurt
www.mynsp.com/welbornhealth/products/guide.aspx? Slippery Elm (bulk)
Rice Bran Syrup
5. Liquid Chlorophyll (NSP #1683-7 16 oz.) or (NSP #1689-6 32 oz.). Replenishes and detoxifies blood, but should be taken an hour away from food.
6. Bioflavanoids with Vitamin C (NSP #1646-4) help to control bleeding.

You mentioned that he is taking prednisone, which is intended to mimic adrenal hormones such as cortin, to control inflammation, etc. Licorice Root (NSP #402-6) and Pantothenic Acid (NSP #1640-2) are specific to rebuilding and supporting adrenal function and may eliminate the need for synthetics.

Q: Tuberculosis

I found out that my middle brother ** has tuberculosis. My sister ** is just getting over pnumonia, she's had it for a month. My brother was at first misdiagnosed, but they think he's had it for at least a few months. We last saw him at Christmas, mostly ** was right around him. Is there a test point for it, like strep and staph? I've looked up everything I can find for it. We had quite a bit of lung / respiratory complaints throughtout the holidays. I'd just like to check to be surxe.

Ans:

I'd go at it like everything else, but I would get right on it. It's more immune (i.e. thymus) than respiratory, but I'd put him through a total systems check. I don't know of a particular point for it. Black walnut (NSP #90-8) is the only specific I know offhand; I would guess coQ10 (NSP #1796-4) might also help since both are good oxygenators. There is a fair amount of suspicion that TB is parasitic, which would also validate the black walnut. One other thing that comes to mind is elecampane, which Cedar Bear is still making.

Q: Soy instead of diary

How do you feel about soy milk instead of cow's milk? Dr. K mentioned that I and my baby should be drinking soy milk. I have not checked with he pediatrician (she is into herbs herself as she prescribed the acidophilus for babies in the formula).

Ans:

I would not suggest soy milk at this point for either of you because it is highly estrogenic. We are working to stabilise your hormone levels and it could be counterproductive for you. You might try oat or rice milk; I would suggest Pacific brand rice milk since they use whole rice rather than rice syrup for production. Dairy milk is difficult for many people to digest, primarily because of the homogenization and pasteurization processes rather than because of an inherent problem in the milk. Cultured products like yogurt and kefir overcome that challenge for some.

Soy milk also has inadequate fat content to support child development, as do other grain-based beverages. Where use of those substitutes is neccesary, I would add cold-pressed flax and/or sesame oil to the mix. Goat's milk is generally the best substitute for breast milk for kids, and is available in powdered form for convenience.

Q: Weight loss

On another issue, a dear cousin of mine in Kansas has had a weight problem since she was young and has now at age 40 has decided to have stomach reduction surgery done. She is fed up with being alone and over weight. She has tried diets, doctors and some natural remedies with no success. She was even in the hospital with Mono for 6 weeks with IV feedings and lost no weight. I feel a lot of it is emotional but she is rather closed on that subject. Any suggestions there as well would be greatly appreciated!!!

Ans:

To be on IV feedings with no weight loss pretty much confirms major emotional issues as a cause; a metabolic disorder that slowed her down that much would probably have left her completely unable to move! Being "rather closed" on that subject kind of confirms your hunch; on top of having no express-ion (as in ability to push stuff out...), her stomach is probably really high into her diaphragm (a doctor might call that a hiatal hernia or diagnose her with GERD) which can put pressure on her thyroid and would limit her digestive capacity, especially if she's compounded it with antacids to ease the accompanying indigestion. Kelp (NSP #410-3) would support the thyroid and give her a good trace mineral source (herbal trace minerals (NSP #980-5) would be even better), and the dandelion (also NSP #250-4) in it would support her stomach function. Dandelion flower essence would also help to loosen the tension in the area. I would probably also consider the stressed earth constitutional formula if her weight is mostly fat, and the stressed water if it is mostly fluid. The first corresponds to emotional issues related to nurturing / mothering, i.e. needing to feel cared for, smother mothering, etc; the second to issues of fear and control.

Q: Child foreskin problems

** is uncircumcised and is having some problems in that area. The foreskin seems to have attached itself near to top of the head. There is redness on the end and puss building up under the ridge. She took ** to the doctor and he attempted to pull the skin down with no success. He was able to push some of the puss out and of course wanted to put him on antibiotics. He said it was a bacterial infection. ** has used the disposable diapers all a long and [he] did muscle test weak in the reproductive area last Christmas. I asked her to try the cloth diapers or get the natural ones but she did not like using the natural ones or the cloth diapers so went back the commercial disposables. [He] is not potty trained yet but she is working on it now that they are moved, he is 2 and 3 months. ** has been putting Lavender oil (NSP #3907-8) and Tea tree (NSP # 1777-1) in his bath water and massaging the lymph glands in his groin area. He did not muscle test for Goldenseal (NSP #340-7) but did for garlic (NSP #290-0) and Lavender. So I made him some of the potato soup with a ton of garlic and onions. It seems to me that the foreskin would need to be disconnect, would it not? Have you ever had this problem? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Ans:

I haven't had to deal with this personally, but sounds like you're on the right track. The foreskin generally shouldn't be forced back over the head of the penis unless it's actually closing up over the end. I would pay lots of attention to keeping it clean, and to what I was using to clean it with. I would stick to Sunshine Cleaner (NSP #1551-6), diluted, with a little of the tea tree and lavendar added, and rinsing really well; commercial soaps, even for babies, are petroleum based and keep the skin from free respiration. Golden salve (NSP #1698-0) would be really soothing as well as antiseptic, and would not iritate or dry the skin, which could further complicate healing.

Q: Oil for the skin

I was just wondering about some oils for your skin. I heard that flax oil (NSP #3162-1) or evening primrose oil (NSP #1787-7) will help you look prettier, you know, get rid of wrinkles. Is that true?

Ans:

Fats, or essential fatty acids, are important for skin tone and flexibility. The fat layer under your skin (along with adequate fluid) is what plumps and softens the appearance of your face, so curtailing your fat intake too much will impact your appearance. The issue is usually fat quality more than quantity, though the low-fat craze of the last few years has affected immune and reproductive concerns even more than aesthetics. Avoid synthetic or hydrogenated fats, since they are not fully digestible. Recent studies confirm that raw nuts are therapeutic even for heart disease, that margerine raises LDL (bad) cholesterol more than butter, etc. I would drink more water and change my diet first; if that didn't enhance my skin sufficiently within 3-4 weeks I would give the added oils a try.

Q: What to do about mono?

Ans:

Following are some of the things I'd be doing if I had mono. Since it's a viral infection I'd be using the Chinese herbal combination VS-C (NSP #937-7) to strengthen the immune response in the necessary ways. L-Lysine (NSP #1631-4) is an amino acid also essential for that process. Lymphomax (NSP #4077-6) is a combination designed to strengthen the lymphatic system, which is the one most affected by mono. In addition, movement of the joints is essential to helping the lymph nodes flush through the waste materials in the bloodstream, which is their primary function. So, while rest is important, so is movement and massage of the lymph nodes which are located at every joint. A mixture of Guardian (NSP #3922-9) and lemon oils (NSP #3908-2) really helps in breaking down and drawing out that waste matter; I have had it wipe out a really sore throat in minutes. Usually you rub firmly over the whole lymph area toward the heart for several minutes in each area as often as you think of it. Drinking LOTS of water is essential. Lots of lemon juice and pineapple juice helps in elimination as well as in keeping the body acid, which prevents other infections from settling in. I would take the VS-C and L-Lysine as suggested but I would take 10-12 Lymphomax a day for about a week before I dropped the amount as suggested and I would start with the Viral Recovery (NSP #8850-8) every hour for two or three days. If I were taking antibiotics (which cannot overcome a virus) I would at least be sure to eat plain, live yogurt a couple times a day to restore the natural helpful bacteria in the body which are a key part of immune function. Hugging feeds the thymus gland; get several! You're welcome to call with questions. Feel Better!

Q: Crohn's Disease

I have come across severa people with Crohn's Disease and went to the web looking for herbal stuff in the treatment. I am across an article by Morton Walker, DPM. He talks at length about HSO's (Homeostatic soil organisms) as the wonder cure. Also something, or the same thing which he calls Primal Defense.

What can you tell me about it the HSO stuff? I am going to read more about Primal Defense

A family who moved into the ward has a son age 19 who developed severe symptoms his Senior year in High Shool. He is controling with diet and is now on a mission in the Northwest. His sister is doing the symptoms, now at age 15 and I kicked in to "herb" mode with the mother **. I told her I would get some info.

The other kid came for a patriarchal blessing and he was a 'sicky!' The waxy skin and emaciated body. I could hardly believe my eyes. He is getting better, but it is along haul.

I don't totally go for what this guy is saying about "one cure fits all" so I wanted to see what you have to say about it. The article sounds just a bit like a Medicine Show out of the back of a horse-drawn wagon, but I look at all the angles.

Hope your convention is/was great and you had a safe trip.

My mom is taking electromagnetic treatments aimed at her endocrine system and she seems to have an increase of energy, more strength and less general pain. Do those unclog stuff? I'll still work on the ideal, which would be to gt her to you somehow. I just talked to her tonight and she has good and bad days. Her Dr is trying herbs, but I am convinced that he really doesn't know how to prescribe, if that is the word you use. She will go along for a while and when she swings back feeling miserable without any long-term relief, she is ready to chuck th whole Dr 'thing'. Oh well, maybe not in this life, huh?

Ans:

Magnets increase circulation to wherever they're placed so they do tend to help with energy in general. Problem is you're still circulating the same blood, which may not be top notch. good thing is at least there is oxygen going around.

Crohn's is very treatable. People usually need digestive help, especially with starches, especially with gluten-containing foods like wheat. That also means they need a major diet adjustment, usually avoiding those foods for a while. Food enzymes (NSP #1836-9) are a shotgun enzyme blend; "Intestinal soothe and build" (NSP #1105-8) (I hate these new, complicated names...) and "chinese spleen activator" (NSP #1880-8) are good to soothe the mucous membranes, which enhances assimilation, and lots of acidphilus (NSP #1666-7) / bifidophilous (NSP #4080-4) would all be a good start. Someone who has had that problem for a while also is probably essentially malnourished since they haven't been absorbing nutrients through the gut wall, so I would use liquid calcium (NSP #3191-6) and colloidal minerals (NSP #4013-6) instead of a multi-vitamin; the liquids will be much easier to digest. When it flares badly, you could suggest the liquid "Stress-J" (NSP #3163-3) and lots of licorice root capsules (NSP #420-6) opened up and drunk as tea. Licorice helps the adrenals, which produce cortin, the original cortisone, for inflammation.

I had some people at the national convention interested in having me come to DC to present some classes, so that is a possibility.

I haven't heard about the earth organisms you mentioned, but the bifidophilus is live critters!!

Q: Flu Shots

Is there anything new to take instead of flue shots?

What should one take if they already have the flue?

Ans:

Remember when you read or pass this on that I am not a doctor or a scientist and can't give medical advice. What you're reading is my opinion and personal experience, which you can use as you see fit.

I have never believed in flu shots; to me the principle is exactly the same as saying "well, if you just watch a litttle porn now then it won't be offensive to you later." In a homeopathic dosage, which is what originally inspired the vaccine concept, the amount is so extremely dilute that there is no chemical or biological impact; at a vaccine dilution the organism is weakened but biologically active.

There are two other principle (yes, that is how I meant to spell it) problems with flu vaccines as I see them. The first applies to all vaccines, which is that the normal route of exposure to viruses is through the mucous membranes of the body, where they are encapsulated and identified. That is what leads to the runny nose, phlegmatic cough, or watery eyes as early symptoms in the body's efforts to flush it out. A vaccine injects it into the tissues and bloodstream without allowing for that exposure, thus bypassing the body's first line of defense and creating a deeper infection. I believe that causes latent infections which may appear later as different symptoms, which I believe was validated in university studies a few years ago when nearly 80% of students with a cough that had lasted for more than two weeks were identified as having latent pertussis.

The other problem with flu shots specifically is that there are literally thousands of "flu" viruses. Every year the CDC gets together with other health authorities and tries to decide which strains they think will be prevalent the following year. The vaccine is manufactured based on their conclusions; you may recall a few years ago when they were totally wrong and had to start all over mid-flu season with vaccines for the strains that actually did prevail.

What I would do instead is use the guardian oil (NSP #3922-9) and/or the wild oregano (NSP #3934-6) around the house or in a diffuser. European studies have clearly demonstrated the anti-viral effect of many essential oils. Defense maintenance (NSP #1654-5), VS-C (NSP #937-7), suma (NSP #1088-5), and target defense (NSP #2820-8) support thymus and immune system functions, as do antioxidants in general. All the basics of geting enough rest, eating right and exercising keep lyphatic flow and eliminative channels open. Isn't it interesting that flu "Season" comes right after the holidays, when we have burned out, been too busy to work out and have loaded up on fast foods and sugar!

If I "get" the flu I will test systems as I do for any other condition or weakness. The "flu" that came around last year started with intense headaches, and tested primary to the pituitary. Super-algae (NSP #1056-5) and alfalfa (NSP #30-2) helped more for me and for my clients than any traditional "flu" or immune system herbs! Taditionally, though, I have had good results with LH-C (chinese metal-supporting constitutional formula) (NSP #1887-6) and fenugreek and thyme (NSP #885-1) with the most recent respiratory virus and the usual respiratory "flu". The HCP-X formula (NSP #1216-5) is also wonderful, especially for deep coughs; it's a traditional Christopher formula that is produced on a seasonal basis by Nature's Sunshine. The homeopathic cough syrups (NSP #8780-3, see also NSP #8785-5 and NSP #8790-8) work very well, and I also like a cough syrup with propolis from Honey garden Apiaries (honeygardens.com).

Since "flu" usually indicates a wekened and sluggish system, reflexology (even simple foot massage) is usually quite helpful. Ginger baths are quite stimulating (always follow with a Sunshine Concentrate (NSP #1551-6) wash, especially on the mucous membranes!) especially when you follow with a gradually cooling shower and end with very cold water on the feet.

This should get you started!

Q: Tea

While at **'s she had some tea from Elsa and they were really delicious. I have several friends having trouble sleeping and wondered if a tea has enough in it to actually make a difference. Also, thinking about **.

The teas are Long Life brand and among the listed blends is Chai, for women, anyway. It looks like one could be sipping tea all day!! "whatever ails ya!"

thoughts?

Ans:

"Chai" by definition is brewed black tea, the kind we're supposed to avoid. For that matter, green tea and red tea are the same plant, just processed or aged differently. Chamomile tea does help some people prepare for sleep, in part from the herb itself if it's good quality and you drink a couple fairly strong cups, and probably in part from the ritual of preparation and taking time to sit down, relax and drink it before you leap into bed and demand that your brain shut down!

Q: Herbs

How are you? My life is still rocking and rolling, thank God for faith and visions!! I think of you all often, many happy memories with your family. I love you all dearly!! I am sure ** is blossoming. And I thought ** was ** last time I saw him. All your beautiful children are growing up.

Speaking of children, ** would like to know what herbs she should take to create the healthiest environment for conception and supporting a healthy pregnancy and baby? She is 42 now and concerned about the odds of conception and a healthy baby. They are still not married but hoping to be as soon as **'s Catholic annulment is final which could be around Christmas. They want to marry and start a family as soon as possible since ** is also 50. She also said her pancreas is bothering her at night. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Ans:

Given her drug / alcohol history I would encourage her to do some major cleansing work on her liver first, since that organ will not only be taxed with filtering both her and the baby's blood during pregnancy (the primary cause of toxemia, a potentially deadly complication) but is responsible for preliminary prostaglandin / hormone production duty which she'll need to conceive. The Tiao He Cleanse (NSP #4000-1) is a good, gentle start, which I'd follow with burdock (NSP #140-2) and Milk Thistle Combination (NSP #4076-5). That alone may also stabilise pancreas function, but you could also consider the Pro-pancreas or Target P-14 formulas (NSP #1022-2) for more support. I'd lean toward the FCS II combination (NSP #878-7) to strengthen the female organs. If the pancreas is a night thing, ask her what she's eating for dinner. If she's doing wine or dessert every night she's raising her blood sugar, then letting it crash. Same goes for lots of simple carbs-white pasta, rice, etc. don't have enough protein to slow down the absorption of sugar. She would probably do well with the Atkins type of diet-usable fats (sour cream, especially, and cold pressed vegetable oils) to support the liver and reproductives, high protein to settle her adrenals, and lots of raw fruits and veggies to flush and rebuild.

Take care,

Kim

Subject: Chinese folk remedy fights cancer

http://www.msnbc.com/news/667259.asp?cp1=1

Ans:

Artemisia combination (NSP #787-6) has also been used to fight parasitic infections forever, and tuberculosis. Interestingly, many naturopaths have believed for years that viruses and parasites are the root cause of some cancers, and parasites in the lungs would have symptoms similar to TB. The virus / cancer link was acknowledged this week in news stories discussing a potential cervical cancer vaccine, which targets one of the viruses clearly linked to it's development. Artemisia combination, which includes a couple species of wormwood, is available year-round.

Q: Affording natural foods

I really appreciate your willingness to help me with all this. I'm overwhelmed and don't know where to begin. I feel like I need to get a part-time job to be able to afford all the natural vitamins, herbs and organic foods. I do love them and always will.

Ans:

As far as the natural foods go, through the buying group they usually end up very comparably priced to supermarket items, but are obviously better quality. You will also find that people will eat less when eating whole foods, in part because their bodies recognise that they have gotten sufficient nutrition from the lesser amount, and in part because there is more fiber in them and that's more filling than empty carbohydrates, which are the basis for most american diets. It is a transition that requires time for most families; check out the Step 1 Changes list for some beginning tips. Start by adding more raw foods - even commercially grown carrots and celery are better snacks than crackers, for example.

Q: Root Canal?

The dentist says that ** needs a root canal. Since this removes the nerve & the tooth is then dead, removal is probably the best with a crown bridge to fill the gap.

What would you suggest to avoid a root canal. How about an ozine injection to dispel the need for it?

Ans:

Probably too late by now (meaning she's already dealt with it), but I did have a client avoid a root canal by oxygenating the area with black walnut extract (NSP #1755-7), vitamin e and peroxide used as a swishing mouthwash several times a day for a couple weeks. It probably depends on the initial problem... severe trauma damage, for exmple, may not be allow healing functions to outpace degeneration. Vitamins C (NSP #1509-8) & E (NSP #1509-8), and calcium (NSP #1671-9) are critical to any healing; if there's nerve impingement, then alpha lipoic acid (NSP #1505-6), licorice root (NSP #420-6), ginger (NSP #300-6) and IF-C (NSP #1875-9) have anti-inflammatory properties that may help.

Q: 4 yr old with pneumonia

Would NSP Elderberry Plus (NSP #868-5) & Bifidophilus (NSP #4080-4) help him? What would you suggest?

When he gets better would Elderberry 1 wk on & 2 weeks off, be good as prevention for him & his 6 year old sister?

Ans:

They might help with general respiratory support, but I personally would go a little stronger. First, lobelia (NSP #1765-8) topically helps to ease the spasms from coughing, and loosens phlegm that may be congesting breathing. Pneumonia by definition is an infection in the air pockets lining the lungs, so a golden seal (NSP #340-7) or hyssop combination might be in order; examples would be IGS II, now Lymph Gland Cleanse, (NSP #960-4) or golden seal / parthenium (available in liquid) (NSP #1781-5). I have personally had good results with the LH combination (NSP #1000-4) and the chinese lung support formulas (NSP #1887-6); I would continue the latter for several weeks to strengthen that system regardless of what other elements I used.

Massaging between the ribs and percussive massage with cupped hands on the sides and back are also helpful. A cup of cider vinegar in a vaporiser along with aromatic oils also helps acidify the respiratory membranes, making them inhospitable to bacteria. Reflex points on the ball of the foot associate with the lungs.

Q: Urinary tract infection

Kim,

I am a homeschool mother of five including a special needs child. We are using the pioneer medicine kit this year in our studies. I found the tape to be very informative and am writing with the hope that you might be able to help me. I am looking for someone to help us with our health problems, so I guess my first question would be whether or not you do long-distance counseling. I have been increasingly unsure of the various doctor recommendations we have received over the past few years. Herbal healing is not something I grew up with, so I'm trying the learn more on my own.

I went to the doctor's office last Friday. I was diagnosed with a mild urinary tract infection and was tested for bacterial vaginosis, which I am fairly sure will be positive as I had to deal with this illness last year and am familiar with the symptoms. I was given an antibiotic to treat the UTI, but I have not started taking it yet because I question taking something that may decrease my beneficial bacteria even more.

I would really appreciate some guidance in this matter and would be happy to pay any fees due to telephone conversations, counseling, treatment advice, and/or the purchase of herbal treatments. Thank you for your time. I will leave my phone number in case you have any questions, or you can e-mail me with a good time to reach you if you decide this is something you would like to discuss further.

Ans:

I am heading out of town, so I will have to get back with details later, but I agree that the antibiotics can antagonize the vaginal condition. If you did start taking them already, get to a health food store for some Brown Cow or Stonyfield Farms plain yogurt -they are the only ones with enough live culture to really make a difference -till you can get a really good live flora culture. Pure cranberry juice prevents bacteria from sticking to the uretheter walls, but again, you will probably only find it at a health food store. Cranberry is typically mixed with lots of sugars, (which includes even fruit juice concentrates) which will feed the bacteria and put you back at square one. Garlic oil (NSP #1694-6) is effective, and can be used as a douche solution for bacterial and yeast types of infections. Pineapple, blueberry, and black cherry juices are supportive of the urinary system in general, and drinking enough water (more than half as many ounces as you weigh in pounds) is vital. Cranberry / Buchu (NSP #834-5) is an excellent combination to address the urinary issue, and I would use a chinese combination called HY-C (NSP #1886-5) to support the reproductives. It is also soothing to mucous membranes and "yin" or hollow organs in the body, such as the bladder. My suggestion for beneficial bacteria is the bifidophilus flora force from Nature's Sunshine (NSP #4080-4). Most cultures in stores are stored without refrigeration even if they are sold from a cooler.

I'll be happy to call you when I get back into town. I'm glad to hear you're enjoying Pioneer Medicine! My husband has never been to Missouri... keep me in mind as a speaker for your Home School Conferences! I have added you to my newsletter list, which should be out in the next couple months. I do have someone working on a website, so that will be available as a resource as well.

Q: Viral vs bacterial?

How can one tell one cause from another other than body temperature? Viral prevails over 102 F? Antibiotics does not work on viral infection?

Then why not use VS-C liquid (NSP #3167-6) more for flu, colds, mono, tonsillitis? Would appreciate your viewpoint. Thanks

Ans:

Right on all counts. The degree of fever is a good indicator, and so is the speed of onset - viral infections tend to hit hard and fast. Viral infections are also generally associated with clear mucous, while yellow or green excretions are strong indicators of bacterial overload. VS-C is helpful for most viral issues, but is specific to herpes related viruses (including chicken pox and cold sores) from a biological standpoint. Lymphomax (NSP #4077-6) is more general to lymphatic stimulation, and has worked very well for my clients with mono, though some have used both. Tonsilllitis has responded well in my family to yarrow and to the lymphatic cleanse formulas formerly known as IGS II (NSP #960-4) and HIGS II (NSP #920-3). For colds, I don't think any combination beats CC-A (NSP #840-5), which, in my mother's words, "doesn't stop the runny nose or other outward symptoms, but keeps you from feeling like you've got a cold". Remember that the runny nose is your body's way of eliminating what it doesn't need; mucous membranes in your nose, eyes and mouth identify invaders and start the processes you need to overcome them.

Kim

P.S. Remember lymphatic massage as well; I use guardian blend (NSP #3922-9) and lemon oil (NSP #3908-2) together in a base oil and milk the glands in the neck and throat down toward the collarbone. If I had mono I would be doing the same in all the lymphatic (inside the joints) areas, working toward the heart.

Reply:

Thanks. Also have found Tea Tree (NSP #1777-1) (1 or 2 droppers in 8 oz of water) as a fantastic mouth wash & swallow for ANY cough or sore throat condition. Tea Tree's antibacterial power keeps mouth & throat in great shape!!

Q: Help with a dry cough

** has this loud abnoxious dry cough that I cannot get rid of. He had a fever a couple of days ago which gave him a major headache. I gave him IN-X (NSP #1220-1), IGS (NSP #960-4), alfalfa (NSP #30-2), iron (NSP #1784-8), Mullein (NSP #460-7), peppermint tea, I've rubbed ylang ylang (NSP #3917-7) on his chest. Well, his fever went down but that cough just won't go away. Is there something I'm missing that I should give him?

I'm coming to see you tomorrow regarding my father in law. Perhaps you have something else for me that I don't have here for **. That cough needs to go (I feel like the house shakes when he coughs) - it's too too loud and dry, he's had this cough for two weeks now.

I need help!

Ans:

Give him lots of the mullein, and use lobelia extract (NSP #1765-8) if you have it. Back off on the peppermint - it is aromatic and astringent, so it will intensify and dry the tissues. Mullein is mucilaginous, so it is more cooling. Massage the balls of his feet - they correspond to the lung area in reflexology. The homeopathic cough syrups from Nature's Sunshine (NSP #8780-3, see also NSP #8785-5 and NSP #8790-8) are really effective. Consider chamomile and licorice teas made with lots of honey; honey and licorice are also mucilants, and chamomile helps to relax the nervous system. Coughs sometimes get chronic from the brain setting into a habit after the cough has outlived its usefullness.

Q: Urinary tract infection 2; ring worm

Thank you for the advice --- I ended up testing negative for the vaginal bacterial infection and did start taking the antibiotic. I did order the Cranberry / Buchu (NSP #834-5) and bifidophilus flora (NSP #4080-4) but haven't received them yet. I am also purchasing a urinary infection home testing kit to have available if symptoms come about again.

My husband has had recurrent ringworm and my 11-year-old special needs daughter just recently had a bout with ringworm on her forward. She now has a fungus infection on her toes, but over-the-counter medicine has been clearing that up. Today I noticed creamy patches on her tongue and am wondering if she also has thrush --- she tends to put her fingers from her face to her mouth.

I am again looking for some help in dealing with these issues and would like an alternative to over-the-counter fungal creams. Swallowing capsules will be difficult for my daughter as she will want to chew anything in her mouth.

Ans:

You can open the bifidophilus capsules right into your daughters mouth... it has a pretty neutral taste. You can also mix it with some whole milk yogurt; plain would be best because any sugar contributes to yeast and fungal growth. The same plain yogurt can be smoothed right onto her bottom. Nature's Sunshine also makes a chewable bifidophilus specifically for children (NSP #3302-0), who normally have a slightly different bacterial balance in the colon. I would keep her on it for a while. A tendency to those types of infections is most common with a diet that is too high in sugar, remembering that refined starches like white flour and pasta act as sugars in the body. There is a product called caprylimmune (NSP #2808-5) which would probably help if this is a recurring problem. These infections can also pass from person to person through any kind of intimate contact and through laundry. I would use the nature's sunshine concentrate cleaner (NSP #1551-6) with tea tree (NSP #1777-1) and lavendar oil (NSP #3907-8) added to remove the residue of your commercial detergents, which contribute to skin problems by sealing the skin with petroleum residue. The two oils are antiseptic and antifungal as well.

For ringworm I use tea tree oil or Pau D'arco extract (NSP #1774-2) or lotion (NSP #1614-4); cider vinegar will also work but is a little slower, and I wouldn't use anything but pau d'arco lotion near the mucous membranes on your daughter's bottom.

I have several video classes from a series called "family matters" that might be helpful. The audio was not what I was hoping for, so the 2 hour tapes (there are five in all) are $10.00 apiece; I also have several audio classes from $8.00 each, one of which is specific to kids.

Q: Is VS-C safe to use when pregnant?

I had a couple of questions about the VS-C (NSP #937-7).
Is it o.k. to take it while I am pregnant?
On the bottle it says to take four capsules with a meal two to four times daily.
Is that how many I should take and do I need to take it everyday or should I take it when I feel an outbreak coming on?

I'm taking the prenatal vitamins (NSP #49178) and the calcium with magnesium (NSP #1671-9), plus my other stuff (Super GLA (NSP #1844-5), Cardio Assurance (NSP #801-5) & B-Complex (NSP #1778-9)) (whew that's a lot of stuff) is there anything else I should take :) ? I am not taking them on a regular basis because there are times when nothing stays down.

Oh yeah and do you have any suggestion on nausea? I'm always throwing up and feeling yucky, I'd be grateful for any advice. ** gave me some of the raspberry extract, it seems to helping a little. I remeber you mentioning something about ginger.

Thanks, Take care.

Ans:

The VS-C is fine to take during pregnancy. I would take what the bottle suggests when you feel an outbreak coming, and take a couple every day to head them off in general. Ginger (NSP #300-6) and the raspbery liquid (NSP #3425-4) can both be made into tea and sipped when you are nauseated. The biggest problem with nausea in pregnancy is the risk of dehydration; even if you are not actually vomiting, people tend to work at eating rather than drinking and your need for fluids increases exponentially while you are pregnant. Remember, you now have to eliminate waste for two and recycle amniotic fluid in addition to simply keeping the body functional in it's own right.

I would worry less about supplements and more about eating right. Homemade soups are a great way to get nourished and hydrated at the same time, and are nutrient rich since you don't discard the vitamins released into the broth. Cheat and used packaged vegetable or chicken broth (both are available in health food stores without preservatives and sugar added, and from organic sources) with grains added; throw in finely chopped or grated fresh vegetables after it's cooked and turn off the heat while the vegetables steam. Fresh or powdered ginger can also be added to soup, which heps it stay down.

Q: A daughter's problem

Is NSP's Distress Remedy (NSP #8975-1) or Depressaquel (NSP #8755-1) close to Five Flower?

Is there a liquid form of Bee Pollen (NSP #70-9) available or should ** just put a few granules under her tongue?

I assume the above is for when an attack is coming on. What would be the core problem to strengthen on a longer term to reduce occurences. Thanks.

Ans:

Bee pollen granules (open the capsule) are fine; they dissolve almost immediately. The Distress remedy is closest to 5-flower. It has the flower essence formula but adds arnica and other homeopathics for physical injuries. Some people, including me, don't feel it's a good mix. Flower Essences and true homeopathics are at different vibrational levels and may confuse or cancel each other. I prefer to use them at least 10 minutes apart.

Q: 5 month old girl with Chicken Pox

Kim, do you have any suggestions?

Ans:

Probably a little late to help with this one, but....VS-C (NSP #937-7) is a chinese formula specific to the herpes virus, which causes chicken pox. It works really well to accelerate the recovery process. Licorice root (NSP #420-6) and/or Stress-J (NSP #1087-0) help with the itching taken internally; Nature's Sunshine Herbal Trim Skin Conditioner (NSP #1669-0) is wonderful applied externally. My three older children have all been through them in varying extremes, and these things helped all of them. Aaron has had them three times; the last one developed over such a long period that I actually took him to a doctor to reassure my parents that he didn't have some dire skin condition. The doctor took a look and said "wow. That's the most incredible case of chicken pox I've ever seen". So much for the "once you've had them it will never happen again" theory that convinces people to subject their kid to yet another chemical-laced vaccine! The good news is that even that case was not uncomfortable for him using the items I listed.

Reply:

Thanks. Can these be given internally to a 5 month old? Are there groundrules for what can / cannot be given to infants for a range of infant health problems?

Ans:

No problem. I have given glycerin herbal extracts to a 3 pound brand new preemie with resounding success. I am so grateful for muscle testing to be able to determine exactly what someone needs -which anyone can learn to do with the video - so I don't have to check a long list of protocols that may or may not be valid. Generally the only thing to be careful with for an infant that NSP has put into liquids is Una de Gato (NSP #175-0), which discourages the production of new blood vessels (which is why it has been found effective in tumor reduction). It is important not to give alcohol to children under four, so if you want to use an alcohol extract, it needs to be de-alcoholised. You can do that by simply letting the product sit open for 24 hours and evaporate it, or pouring boiling water into a glass container, pouring it right out and replacing it with the extract, letting the heat accelerate the process. You can also mix powdered herbs into a thin paste and administer them with an eye dropper. A few taste good and are effective as teas; licorice is a classic for constipation, croup and adrenal stresses in addition to its other properties. Babies generally know what is good for them if they have not been fed high sugar foods (which includes many formulas) and will drink things they need even if they taste horrible to us; Micah was quite jaundiced after birth and was drinking 8 ounces of bayberry (which is really nasty) tea twice a day for three days. The fourth day he looked fine but I decided to keep it up "just to be sure"... he wouldn't let the bottle near his mouth.

Q: What kind of water filter to use?

I am looking at water filters.

I have the carbon people telling me that RO takes all the minerals out of the water and that we need them.

Nothing less than a 4-stage RO will be pure enough. so, I reason. why are there two and three stage filters on the market? (I do know the smell of $$ does strange things)

How does the process work, exactly. I can't seem to grasp wht happens there and it seems that there is an element of wasted water, but I can't seem to pin anyone down on that one.

Some of what I read alludes to 'less waste' but one person I talked to said tht the water thaWhicht goes through the filter is what goes into the tank to be used. Okay. Confusion reigns somewhat.

Is there somewhere you can send me?

I also, don't undertand why Florida is not a good place to have an under sink tank. What happens to purified water when it sits? Seems that there is nothing left to deteriorate if it is purified.

For my mom. Is there a 'general' milti vitamin at Nature's Sunshine that she could take. She is feeling the need for it and I asked her to hold off before buying one until I got back to her.

Thanks.

Ans:

NSP has a time-released multiple vitamin and mineral (NSP #1619-5) that would probably be great for your mom.

Fundamentally, the difference between carbon and RO is that carbon is just a filter. Reverse Osmosis and Distillation are the only water processes that are legally purifiers. RO literally forces the water through a semi-permeable membrane that forces it to separate into hydrogen and oxygen and allows it to recombine on the other side. This is the reason I prefer RO to distilled water; there is a lot of freee oxygen on the other side of the membrane so the water "sparkles" when you pour it and tastes wonderful. Distilled water tastes flat because there is no free oxygen. Oxygen, being the fundamental element for life, is a good thing in my mind! The size of the membrane is a key issue, since it works kind of like cheesecloth-going through one layer won't work effectively. The Nature's Spring RO Unit (NSP #1935-3) has over 8 square feet of membrane, and can be purchased interest-free for six months. The 2 or 3 stage deal is simply the addition of a pre-filter and post-filter. The first is usually to reduce chlorine, which extends the life of the RO membrane. The second is just a detail. Nothing larger than an oxygen molecule can get through the membrane, so it does remove the minerals in the water - but if there were enough minerals in your water to make a difference you would taste them and it would be a certified "mineral water". You can add a few drops of colloidal minerals (NSP #4013-6) to a gallon of water and be way ahead. Remember, lead is a mineral, too! Carbon doesn't remove minerals... or much else. It reduces chlorine, but does not neccesarily reduce trihalomethanes, an even more dangerous by-product. Studies done in government housing projects showed that houses with charcoal (carbon) filters consistently had more colds and flu than households with proxies, since a moist, dark environment is the perfect breeding ground for bacteria and viruses. There, too, is the reason for not using an RO system with a holding tank in Florida or other areas where the groundwater is relatively warm. Pure water in a tank does not have the chlorine to kill or prevent bacterial and fungal growth. Since the tanks are not sterile or vacuum sealed there is a high probability of contamination developing. The other issue for most whole-house systems is that the RO is an afterthought rather than the basis for primary treatment, and frequently does not have sufficient membrane size to effectively act as a purifying process.

Hope this answers your questions.

Kim

Q: Glaucoma

My husband just recently went to the eye doctor to have his eyes checked and they have diagnosed him as having glaucoma. Is there anything from Nature Sunshine that he can take to help or reverse this condition? We have Wild Oats health food store here and I thought about just taking him there and trying to muscle test in the store all the different products they have on the shelf that are supposed to help with vision. I'd rather stick with Nature Sunshine though because I know the quality of the product. Any input from you on this subject would be welcome. Thanks for responding -- I look forward to hearing from you.

Ans:

I had one client who did very well with the "JP-X" combination from Nature's Sunshine (NSP #1222-7) when she was diagnosed with glaucoma. The kidneys are the organs in the body responsible for controlling fluid levels everywhere, so are often found to be a weakened or stressed area when ocular or inner ear pressure are imbalanced. She actually began taking the combination for a kidney complaint many years after the glaucoma diagnosis and did not expect to correlate the two; her pressure had dropped significantly when she went for an eye exam a few weeks later. Her medication was reduced by her doctor, and she continued to take the juniper berry blend (jp-x). Within a few months the doctor had removed her from all medication and her pressure remained normal. Traditionally, bilberry (NSP #74-8) is used for eye complaints in general; you might also test EW (NSP #861-3), a traditional eye building formula as an adjunct product.

Q: What to do about colic?

Ans:

Having a child with colic is one of the most challenging stresses for new moms. I found that several natural resources were available to ease my daughter's distress and the exhaustion that I was coping with after being up all night rocking and walking the floors a few times. An old remedy is catnip and fennel (NSP #3195-3), either in a strong, warm tea or in a glycerin extract. Catnip relaxes the vagus nerve behind the stomach and fennel helps to stimulate digestion. Since lack of digestion is usually the cause, examine your diet if breastfeeding and the formula you are using if you're not. Many babies react poorly to aged cheese, pork, some beans and occasionally grains or other foods in a mother's milk. Spices are not usually a problem since they tend to stimulate digestion; in fact a study last year found that the more garlic was in a mother's milk the longer a baby would nurse! Many formulas are corn or soy based, and may be hard for some babies to completely metabolize. Since food allergies and sensitivities can be the root of many other health issues (ear infections, for example, can be related to wheat allergies), it's worth experimenting to find which one is right for your unique baby. Massaging the feet, calves and abdomen is often helpful, especially with dandelion oil, which relaxes the solar plexus. For moms, taking time to take a deep breath and relax as you feed your baby is helpful. Also make sure your B vitamin level is adequate to your new task, and perhaps consider using blessed thistle (NSP #100-1), passion flower (NSP #500-3), chamomile (NSP #190-7) or hops (NSP #380-9) to calm yourself for your baby.

Q: Are there natural things to use to help with bugs and insect stings?

Ans:

I understand how important bugs are to the ecosystem. What I don’t understand is why they want to live in my house or on my body. Following are a few ways I’ve tried to discourage them...

We have been invaded lately by tiny Pharoah ants which are defying even most commercial pesticides, according to our newspaper. For some unknown reason they will not cross a line of the NSP Sunshine Concentrate Cleaner (NSP #1551-6) so I use it full strength around areas where they came in (it dries invisible) and mix it with water in a strong solution to spray the ones I find.

On the garden I spray with that mixture but add a little capsicum (cayenne pepper) (NSP #160-5); I also fertilise with organic Bio Sea-Grow which also helps deter aphids.

I can handle those pests much more easily than the ones that try to feed on me. When ** was two he got into a fire ant nest and was engulfed to his knees. I threw him into the tub to get them off, and when he got out I saw the NSP Herbal Skin Conditioner (NSP #1669-0) on the counter. I tipped the bottle onto my hand and slapped it against his ankle as I carried him into his room. When I put him down to get him dressed he had a perfect imprint of my hand. It was cool and normal skin surrounded by angry red welts. We had no blisters or itching even from that many stings. (It’s been great for mosquito bites, hives, even shingles and chicken pox too.)

At a picnic last year one woman had a tick in her stomach. We put Tea Tree Oil (NSP #1777-1) at the site and laughed as the tick backed out and ran away! While most insect repellants don’t seem real effective against ticks, the Citronella Oil Spray did work.

Pau D’arco Lotion (NSP #1614-4) has been helpful in eliminating fungal infections such as athlete’s foot in our family. My son saw significant improvement in a couple days after summer camp. We have also used tea tree oil for ringworm.

There is a non-toxic way to replace every poison in your home, usually at the same cost or less. You can significantly reduce the stress on the immune and respiratory system with these simple changes.

Q: Child skin problems

**'s skin was clear for about one month. I actually had him off of all his meds. He has had a little relapse with the staph the last couple of days. I have started his herbs and an antibiotic to help his system again. His skin seems to be repsonding nicely. He has been such a changed little boy because of his skin being more "normal" as ** would say. Thanks

Ans:

So glad to hear it! Has he been spending much time in the pool? That may upset his pH enough to let the staph re-emerge; if that's the case, mix the sunshine concentrate (NSP #1551-6) about 2-1 with some cider vinegar and wash him down as soon as he is out.

He should stay on the herbs for several months, even though his skin appears clear. Unlike medication, they aren't treating the symptoms. Rather, they are stabilising the underlying functions that allowed the symptoms to appear in the first place. It takes time to replace enough cells inthe relevant organs to keep them functioning properly. We will keep checking him periodically, and the quantities will continue to diminish, but he will need support for a while yet.

Q: Depression and Pregancy

My sister deals with depression and now she is pregant. She has previously been on medicine but obviously can't take that now. Are the Mood Elevators (NSP #1878-8) safe when pregnant? When looking up the main herbs online, almost everything says not to use during pregnancy. When I called NSP to ask about it (because I would have used it; the bottle has no warning), the reply was that NSP does not recommend most herbal supplements for pregnant and lactating women. I'm just looking for a knowledgeable and truthful answer. I'm not looking for anyone to quote in case there is a problem.

Ans:

Most supplements are required by the same legislation as that which gave us the right to make structure / function claims to state the limitations you mentioned on the labels. All over-the-counter remedies, including homeopathics, are required to carry the same "warning." My personal experience is that most common herbs are safe in pregnancy, though I rely on muscle testing to verify individual use as I do with non-pregnant people. I would generally avoid strong "hormonal" herbs, though, again, I have had clients unable to sustain pregnancies until they were taking them! I personally would have no problem with taking the Chinese Mood Elevator formula if I were pregnant. It is a "chi regulator", not a stimulant. I would also encourage generous amounts of B vitamins (nutri-calm (NSP #1617-3) or B-complex) and liquid calcium (NSP #3191-6) in addition to the prenatal vitamin. I have a number of clients who have done well with the Depressaquell homeopathic remedy (NSP #8755-1), which is fine to use during pregnancy in my opinion. Flower essences deal with the source of depression, but I'd need a lot more information to suggest a specific one. Again, if you muscle test (the video teaches it quite thoroughly) you can test her yourself!

Q: Help loosing weight after a complete hysterectomy

I had a complete hysterectomy five years ago. I was put on two different hormones which this year I have weaned off both. I take medication for high blood pressure, effesxor for hot flashes, vioxx for shrinking discs, allegra for sinus problems flaxseed oil for bad cholesterol , vitamin e, c , calcium, the list goes on. In the last five years I have put on 45 pounds with no success of loosing a pound. I am not junk food eater . I eat oatmeal for breakfast with a bagel later on in the morning. I usually have fruit, a healthy lunch and dinner but no matter what I do I cannot loose a pound. Can you help me?

Ans:

I have to let you know, first, that I'm not a doctor and can't tell you to stop your medications. I believe that I can help you find out what in your body isn't working, and work with you to help your body function stabilise. For many people, eating "healthy foods" like complex carbs may even pose a problem if, for example, your pancreas is not producing the enzymes to help you break them down properly.

My initial consultations take about an hour and a half and are $85, which also includes your first recheck. That will include recommendations for any supplements which may support the specific weaknesses you may have (I do not promote herbal "diet" programs), as well as specific dietary and lifestyle counsel. In addition to herbs and general supplements, I work with flower essences and attars for emotional stresses, essential oils and homeopathics for energetic issues.

Please call if I can be of further help.

Q: Diagnostic points for Lyme disease

My son has had some facial palsy which we are assuming as Bell's Palsy, but the Dr. also had his blood taken to check for lyme disease. Is there a specific MRT spot to check for lyme disease? Also, I read to test for sodium and potassium for Bell's palsy. Are there spots for that or is it just the normal holding the product and testing for the response. Thanks for your help.

Ans:

I don't use diagnostic points; there may be one for Lyme disease but I don't know it. I feel the same way about test points for specific nutrients, especially since I generally work with herbs rather than isolated elements as I believe they are assimilated more efficiently. If someone needs sodium, for example, they would generally test well for dandelion (NSP #250-4) or parsley (NSP #490-9), depending on where the deficiency was having impact. I always check all body systems and work from there. My clients with Lyme disease confirmed have tested for different supplements; for tremors in general I have seen success with combination Nerve Eight (NSP #850-3) and the chinese Stress Relief (NSP #1863-5) formulas.

Q: Hot flashes

I am having trouble with "hot flashes" and asked my Md. about using herbal therapy of soy, red clover, B6 and B12 which I found at GNC. She gave her okay to use. What would you suggest for herbs? I am weaning off an antidepressant which was a trial for the "hot flashes" but I am still having them. I am 61 and have been off Premarin for over a year. Any suggestions would be welcome.

Ans:

Congratulations on getting off the premarin! Many of my clients have had good results with a menopause homeopathic remedy (NSP #8728-2) that I carry for immediate relief from the hot flashes, with herbal supplements helping to eliminate them in the meantime. Soy is helpful for some women who are able to manufacture estrogen from the plant elements, but will not help if the issue is progesterone or blood sugar related. You can try a product called flash-ease (NSP #81-4) (available through the website or you can pick it up from me), or you can make an appointment for a private consultation to identify exactly what would work best. The flash ease contains dong quai (NSP #258-8), the "queen of herbs" in Chinese medicine, and black cohosh (NSP #80-3), which is used in Europe during menopause to help the body stabilise estrogen levels. One other herbal option, especially if depression was symptomatic, is the Chinese "Bu Yin" or HY-C formula (NSP #1886-5), which supports the movement of "yin" or female energy throughout the body.

Private consultations are $85.00, which last about an hour and a half; a recheck is included in the initial fee as well.

Q: Child's fever

** has a fever today and I can't seem to bring it down. She's congested. I've tried homeopathic fever and I've given her IN-X. Still very hot! What can I do?

Ans:

Quickest thing is a garlic enema. Try a tepid bath with cider vinegar as well. How high is it? Viruses don't die till around 103 (bacteria start to fold about 101), so if it's in that range just make sure she stays well hydrated and keep her minerals high and she will be ok. The vinegar bath is a way to let her absorb the minerals through the skin. If she is congested, you need to get the chimneys open, which is what the enema does; keeping her fluid levels high makes sure the kidneys are not stressed. The body gets fevers for a reason-let them work. If it is over 103 what has worked best for me is the chinese IF-C (clear the heat) (NSP #1875-9) formula; you might also try catnip (NSP #180-4), peppermint oil (NSP #1706-8) on the feet or yarrow (NSP #750-2).

Q: Sinuses and the Ephedra warning

I had heard that Eyebright (NSP #260-3) works really great to clear the sinuses - and it does. You said that it drains the lymphatic system in the face and head, but recommended Sinus Support (NSP #1246-7) as being even better. But the Nature's Sunshine information on it warns that ephedra (contained in Sinus Support) may be dangerous under certain conditions. What can you tell me about that? Thanks.

Ans:

The law in many states now requires warning labels on products containing ephedra, and there is a very real chance that it will be entirely banned if many in the FDA get their way. The problem is not inherent to ephedra (also known as ma huang), as many people believe. The whole herb has been a safe and vital part of Chinese medicine for thousands of years, and is especially valuable in the treatment of asthma, which is now at epidemic levels in this country. The problem has arisen with people here looking for a lazy way to weight loss, who have used ephedra extracts spiked to specific alkaloid levels and combined the herb with large amounts of caffeine and/or high caffeine herbs such as guarana. I have seen ma huang in formulas with as many as six different sources of caffeine. While caffeine is a direct stimulant or generator of energy, Ma Huang moves "stuck" energy in the body. That accounts for it's ability to open constricted respiratory pathways, and for the emotional agitation some people experience while taking it. Every client I have ever had who felt uncomfortable taking it was someone who was generally an "uptight" kind of person who held back lots of feelings; ma huang got things moving that they had previously managed to supress. Caffeine is a drug, even coming from green tea, red tea, guarana or coffee beans. Ma huang used as a whole plant is not; refined, standardized, isolated extracts may be.

Remember that Sinus Support was the product that put my son's health back on track when he was two and a half!

Q: Help conceiving a child

Kim, I need something to help my sperm count [go up] and need something for the wife to help get pregnant and raise libido.

Ans:

** ** I try to work with my clients to determine the root of the concerns at issue. Sperm count, for example, is a function related not only to male hormonal function specifically, which might be addressed by korean ginseng or a general male combination like X-A; it can also be related to liver function, which controls prostaglandin production and regulates hormonal function. If the latter is the case, sarsaparilla, maca, or black currant oil or other essential fatty acids may be more relevant. Is your wife not getting pregnant because of the low sperm count, or does she have her own specific health issues that may be preventing her from conceiving? This sounds like a high-stress issue in your household, which by itself can make things worse since the adrenal glands, which control stress response, are also implicated in reproductive weaknesses, The body will generally not allow a conception it does not feel it can sustain.
I would really encourage you to come in for a private consultation rather than taking lots of supplements on a hit-or-miss trial basis. You will save money and time in the long run. I have seen clients overcome these same hurdles in relatively short time periods.

Q: Itchy skin

I contemplated coming to you over a year ago, then backed out and went through traditional medicine. Guess I should have started with you. I was being treated for adrenal / thyroid problems, and am doing much better in this regard, but not all the way healed. My most urgent problem (probably related) is that I am itching all over ... and its driving me nuts! Please let me know when I can get an appointment. ** ** Thanks.

Ans:

** ** I don't know if you are taking synthyroid, but itching and rashes are a listed side effect of the medication, and one that I have personally seen in two of my clients. The adrenals are key with itching, since they control your histamine response.

Q: Rash worse when sweating

[I]t seems like when I sweat my rash gets worse, like when i clean house I itch from sweating so bad. ** **
Thanks.

Ans:

That your rash gets worse when you sweat tells you that you are probably too acidic. Drink all the water you are supposed to (half as many ounces as you weigh in pounds) and add a couple of glasses of not-from-concentrate pineapple juice to keep your kidneys flushing.

Q: Psoriasis

A gal in **'s office and her son are suffering terribly and she has looked into some alternatives. He thought of you so if there is anything in general that helps or I could talk to you a little more about her and see what comes up.

Ans:

Psoriasis is always liver related, both too much toxicity and too little assimilable fat. Most people do well with LIV-j or burdock, and CLA or super gla. Most also need lots of digestive support, aspecially for the pancreas. They need to get away from commercial soaps and laundry products, which all have a petroleum base. They can use the Sunshine Concentrate cleaner for body and home. It's a good idea to test them for foods, since the weakened digestion makes them especially prone to food (especially wheat and other grain) "allergies". The other organ usually at issue is the adrenal glands; they often need lots of pantothenic acid and licorice root, especially if they itch.

Q: Lymph Nodes:

I was on your mailing list years ago and somehow lost touch with you. I recently received your newsletter and was glad to see that your ministry/practice has flourished. Thank the Lord for the service you provide. On that note I have a situation about which I need advice. A recent breast ultrasound has revealed something in the lymph nodes under my left armpit. I have been plagued with boils in this area for several years. You have recommended recommended Tia Hse Cleanse and it has worked most of the time. Some times I was unable to complete the cleanse (due to children being ill and hospitalized, caring for my mother who is a double amputee , and just the demands of homeschooling two teens and a 7 year old.) The doctors have scheduled another ultrasound (this time of the area in my armpit) in two weeks. I would like to know whether there is anything I could take now and continue taking after the exam, that might help the situation. This situation first came to light because of the burning pain on the side of the breast leading from my arm pit. I would dearly appreciate your advice and I know that this in no way constitutes a medical diagnosis.

Ans:

Off the top of my head I think I would try "Breast Assured" and "Lymphatic Drainage" to get things opened up. There is a drawing salve called "Black Ointment" that I would use topically in the entire area, along with warm moist compresses a couple times a day. You can order the products from the NSP link on my website. Is it your right or left breast?

Q: Lymph nodes (cont.) & Blue nails

Thank you so much for responding. I will do as you have suggested. I'm glad to hear that Matthew is doing well. My daughter is also well. She has sickle cell anemia but God has been extremely good to us. Hospital stays are not uncommon, but considering the possible severity of this disease we have not been overburdened. In answer to your question, the problem is in my left breast from my armpit, down the side toward the aureola . As I stated in my email, I have had boils under my arm on several occasions and using the Tiao Hse Cleanse has usually helped. I can't help but wonder if this is related in some way. I must say that the Black Ointment you suggested below has never seemed to help. I don't know why. Usually a poultice of charcoal, goldenseal and tea tree oil helps with the boils. Would that help in this situation?

Secondly, Kim, I recently noticed that my 17 year old daughter's nails are partially blue. She is always cold with extremely cold (icy) hands and feet. This occurs no matter the temperature. As a teen she is very busy and seldom takes the time to take the multivitamins we provide for her. She will be seeing her doctor tomorrow but I want something herbal to give her. Fortunately, her doctor is pro herbs. To tell the truth it wouldn't matter if he were not; herbal therapy works, period.

Ans:

The Tiao He Cleanse would help because it is based on chinese herbs that support the liver, which is responsible for controlling blood toxicity. Knowing that has been the case, it would be wise to continually support the liver; you might consider regularly taking the formulas in the cleanse, like the liver balance formula. In addition, the "Lymphatic Drainage" I suggested actually tests primary to the liver, not the lymph, so it would help both with breaking down the poisons and with the body's efforts to remove them through the lymphatic system. The Black ointment is a drawing salve; if the "boils" are actually contained in the lymphatics they can't be drawn to the surface like a true boil. Charcoal, goldenseal and tea tree oil would increase circulation and might be helping that way.

Capsicum is the best thing to increase circulation generally. I would use that if her energy level is fairly normal and the blue nails are your only indicator of a proble. If she seems "burned out" overall, I would use the chinese HS-C (now called nervous fatigue formula) to "nourish the fire", which is the element governing the circulatory system.

Q: Sluggish bowel

I left a message (phone) about a friend of mine who is having trouble with extremely swollen feet and a sluggish bowel. If you have the time and she is still having the problem, I would love to give her your number. Please let me know when you will be available (I know you're busy) and how much you charge for a phone consult and I will give her the information. Thank you again for responding. I truly appreciate it.

Ans:

The swollen feet show her kidneys are under stress, which would naturally follow a sluggish bowel since her body would back up to the second chimney if the first can't handle the load. She can order the bowel detox through my website as a good start with supplements. Her most important task is to get enough water - half as many ounces as she weighs in pounds - and fiber-raw fruits and vegetables as the best source - into her body to let things open up. Pineapple, dark cherry and blueberry juices may help, as will lots of parsley.

Q: Pregnant

My niece is pregnant. She is a healthy 27 yr. old . She has had a great preagnancy and is starting to dialate thin and the Dr. can feel the babys head. She is wanting to get this over. Does drinking castor oil cause you tto go into labor? My daughter did this with her baby and went into labor the next morning. Was it her time or did it help?

Ans:

Could have just been her time, but castor oil internally can act as anirritant and would cause bowel contractions, which could stimulate pelvic contractions if everything is ready. Blue Cohosh is the traditional herb for stimulating contractions if the body is prepared for labor. Commonly available herbs will not override the body's natural functions, so will not stimulate labor if the baby isn't ready. 5W is a combination formula that is often used; it was originally designed to be used during the last 5 weeks of pregnancy to prep the uterus. Black currant oil also helps by providing a good source of fatty acids for prostaglandin (hormone precursor) production.

Q: Eczema

I would like to set up an appointment by phone or in person formy sister who suffers from severe eczema over virtually all her body. She would like to speak with you regarding various herbs her research has uncovered that might aid her condition. She would also like to know if there is a herb that will jump start her adrenal gland so ACTH can be produced.

Ans:

Research is great, but every body is different and what works for one may not help another. I charge $85.00 for a consultation, which lasts about an hour and a half and includes a thirty minute follow-up. Licorice root and pantothenic acid are the best all-around support forthe adrenals. Eczema generally shows a deficiency in digestable fatty acids or inability to metabolize fats, pointing to the pancreas head function as a rule. In addition, the liver is the one organ always at issue in individuals who exhibit symptoms of eczema; the liver is a fat-dependent organ and so you can see the relationship. I sometimes mix licorice extract into a catalyst water and MSM (sulfur) blend as a soothing mist.

Q: Follicular Lymphoma

Hello. I'm writing you after reading your web site. I am a singer, live in California, and am 51 years old. I have been diagnosed with grade 2, stage 3 non-Hodgkins B-cell follicular Lymphoma. I had a biopsy where a tumor was excised from my left chest wall, and CT scans revealed tumors in my spleen and behind my right obdurator muscle in the pelvis. My liver LDH levels are elevated. My doctors will soon be recommending which chemotherapy to take. I feel disinclined to go that route, and would like to consult with you as to your opinion. My inclination is to take an alternative healing route. It is clear that it must be soon and rigorous. This is not a "watch and wait" situation.

I am wondering if this disease is healable by natural means? One healer I consulted suggested taking Lymphomax and zinc for three months. In trying to find out what Lymphomax is, I came upon your website. Please tell me if you have experience working with cancer, specifically, this kind of lymphoma, and if you have insight and suggestions for me. I am quite overwhelmed with the amount of alternative cures, and unfortunately, am not able to begin to afford what many of them cost.

Are there practitioners here in the bay area that you would suggest working with? Please contact me and tell me if we can work together in some way.

Thank you for your time and gifts. I look forward to hearing from you.

Ans:

By law I have to first tell you that I am not a physician, and cannot give you medical advice. What I can do is to help you understand howyour body works and what we can do to help it work more effectively. Herbs don't cure cancer, the body does. I have worked with several dozen people who told me that they had been diagnosed with cancer. I have seen many who chose not to do any traditional treatment recover completely. I have one client who passed away recently after a serious fall; he was under hospice care when we met for advanced throat cancer and a 7x7x16 liver tumor. Prior to the fall, after 5 months of a (notvery consistent) herbal program the throat was fine and the liver tumor measured 7x3x12. He had been told when he was diagnosed and assigned to hospice that he had an expectancy of 6-8 weeks. I do not question the specific type of cancer, and do not believe there are different, specific, protocols for individual kinds since I evaluate body systems and organs and work to strengthen organ weaknesses. Lymphomax is excellent support for the lymphatics generally, but I think I would be inclined more toward using the liquid "Lymphatic Drainage" instead as most individuals "with" cancer (remember that everybody produces "cancer" cells every day from birth; they become a problem only when your body stops recognizing them) have relatively poor digestive systems. My suggestions would include a variety of approaches in addition to supplements - lymphatic massage, castor oil packs, coffee enemas and major dietary changes. Whatever approach you choose, it is vital to be consistent and to use the entire program. When I have seen cancer progress in individuals who are using naturopathic approaches, the individuals are always picking and choosing "comfortable" or "most important" parts from a variety of programs. It is really easy to be overwhelmed or to jump from promise to promise on the internet.

I honestly do not know of any specific practitioners on the West Coast to recommend. I charge $85.00 for my consultations and have had many clients who felt that was affordable enough to add the price of a plane ticket and come here. I do travel and teach, but I do not have any current plans to get out there.

Q: A potassium question

My girlfriend called me today and asked me to recommend something for her husband. She said that he is low in potassium and the doctor has prescribed medication for him - but the doctor went out of town and did not write a prescription for his meds and did I have any ideas for him. I don't - so I wondered if you would have the time to send me a few suggestion. I don't even think that I am familiar with how potassium works in the body. I vaguely remember that peppermint oil has an affinity for potassium and will pull it out of the cells - but that is the extent of my knowledge.

Ans:

NSP has a "combination potassium" that is wonderful-plant based, of course, and very assimilable. Potassium isolates can end up screwing the sodium levels and putting more stress on the stomach and kidneys.

Q:

Thanks Kim! If you get a chance can you explain a little about how potassium works in the body and why someone would have low levels. Would it have to do with kidney stress and poor digestion??

Ans:

Potassium and sodium exchange is what maintains the electrical spark in the body. You can tell someone is deficient by pinching a fold of skin on the back of the hand; if it stays up, potassium is in short supply. Excessive sodium in the diet will deplete potassium, and dehydration is another obvious factor in the solution of all trace minerals in the body. Kidney stress and poor digestion are both factors if there is indeed enough potassium in the diet.

Q: Baby constipation problems

Hey Kim! Another quick question for ya......my girlfriend has a 12 week old baby. He is breast fed and was doing well until she got mastitis. The doctors had her on antibiotics and she did not breast feed for a few days. Ever since that episode the baby has been very constipated and fussy. Without muscle testing I gave her catnip and fennel which does not seem to be helping. She took the baby to the doctor today and the doctor said to take the baby off of breast milk and place him on Nutramigin because she thinks he is lactose intolerant. This doctor is also sending them to a gastro specialist in Orlando. My girlfriend does not want to stop breast feeding and she does not think that the baby is lactose intolerant as he does not have diarrhea - just constipation. She says that her take on the situation is that he is having trouble moving it out - he grunts a lot and turns red in the face. My first thought was digestion - maybe small intestine and not being able to break the food down. Something like meadow sweet - which of course I don't have!! Anyway, she is coming over for some muscle testing tomorrow - any suggestions?? Also, her two year old daughter is on a medication for constipation - something that helps keep water in the intestines. Maybe the same thing happening here?? She is pretty good with diet and such - no soft drinks and very little juice.

Ans:

I'd give the baby a little water first of all. The antibiotics could have caused a yeast flare in mom and baby and cause bowel distress for a lot of adults because they kill all the good bacteria, so I'd also test the baby for yogurt or give him a little flora force in some water. I would also use licorice root. It's considered a classic for constipation in babies because A: it is a mild mucilant, so it soothes and lubricates the intestinal membrane and B: it's great for the adrenals, and the baby and mom are both probably stressed. The babies usually love it as a tea. Work the calves and feet of the baby to get the bowel energy moving as well. If all else fails she can take a break and give the baby slippery elm in water which is a complete protein that's easier to assimilate than any formula. Test the mom and baby together for foods, especially since the antibiotic regimen.

Q: How to counteract depleted soils?

I've read that the soil has been depleted of many important minerals and therefore people are not getting proper nutrition eating even the healthier foods found in most groceries. Do you have any suggestions on how best to supplement our diets? Is sea salt a good option? Thanks.

Ans:

Sea salt has many more trace minerals than refined tale salt, all of which are essential for normal body function. Electrolytes are charged mineral particles which carry the nervous impulses through the body, so you can see how vital stable levels are for good health. Modern agriculture does not replace the wide variety of nutrients found an naturally created soil by the breakdown of organic materials such as leaves and so forth; the use of manure and many dfferent sources of composting material is the reason why organic fruits and vegetables are consistently found to have significantly higher levels of trace elements and why their taste is often much stronger. You can maximize the minerals in your foods by eating the peelings, which contain most of the magnesium and many other minerals, and by eating them raw or only lightly steamed or sauteed. Broths and soups also preserve many of the nutrients as opposed to cooking and discarding the liquid. Apple cider vinegar and blackstrap molasses are good food sources of trace minerals as well.

For my cross-country son and my serious dancer daughter, I add about a tablespoon of colloidal minerals and a few drops of lemon oil to their water bottles in lieu of sugary and expensive electrolyte replacement drinks.

Q: Recurring staph infection

My husband is 42 and had a knee surgery several years ago. He also has lymphedema . He started getting recurring staph infections a few years later in the knee area and somttimes it starts in the groin area. At first he got it yearly and now he gets them about every 6 or 8 weeks. We have done all we can here to help him. Are there any specialists that can help ? We are puzzled at this infection, as he has had surgery on the other leg and never has gotten staph there. Please help if you can. This is so hard on our family, he is usually in the hospital 7 days each time. And we know all these antibiotics he must take are not good for his body long term. What else can we do? Please Please help if you can.

Ans:

"Lymphedema" means that the lymph is retaining fluid, which it is supposed to filter and pump through the lymph nodes, which are located in the joint areas, including the knee and groin. The infection "starts" there when the bacteria count increases beyond the body's ability to break it down effectively, which is impaired in this case because of scar tissue from the surgery and the proceeding lymphedema. I would use a blend of guardian and lemon oils to do lymphatic drainage massage, working first the groin area, and then behind the knee, up towards the heart. The lymphatic system works by being "pumped" by joint motion, so gentle but large movement of all the joints, including the ankles and toes, is helpful. Internally, I would be using an herbal blend called IN-X, which Dr.John Christopher initially developed for use with staph and strep infections, and taking several bifidophilus/flora force before bed each night to rebuild the beneficial flora in the gut that has been destroyed by the antibiotics.

 Q: Heart palpitations

Well, Kim. The heart palpitations didn't go away, and Wed. night they were even stronger, and accompanied by dizziness and a headache, so I went to the ER. The EKG in the ER showed that I was having PACs (pre-atrial contractions) which are harmless, but since I was dizzy and nervous, they admitted me for monitoring overnight. I still had not been released or seen a doctor at 6pm the next night, so I began to inquire about checking myself out. They finally got ahold of the doctor (from my last doctors office, but not one I had heard of), and he would be there at 9pm. He said I could check myself out and do it as an outpatient, if I chose, but he recommended staying. Since it wasn't that much longer, and one of the nurses commented that my heartbeat had slowed to 30 overnight (unusual?) and was extremely irregular, I decided to stay rather than have to arrange appointments and tests. Anyway, between the family doctor and the cardiologist, they ordered an ultrasound, echocardiogram and chemical stress test. All these were done on Friday, and I had signed the papers without understanding what they were. I would have refused the echocardiogram if I had known it was a nuclear test, and I thought I was going for the treadmill stress test, not the chemical one. However, I later found the papers that I signed that stated what they were. The nurse/tech preparing me for the stress test told me young women seem to have the hardest time with it, but that she would have the anecdote ready should I have any problems....I had them all (though none of them related to the heart). I had achy joints, nausea, headache, shivering/chattering....I eventually got the anecdote (chemically neutralizes the first medicine), once they got enough of the test. The ultrasound tech suggested that I ask for a catheter test to test the electrical signals...she said my heart was flipping all around...I didn't feel I needed to ask for more tests. The doctors concluded I was fine, and gave me NO information about what was causing the palpitations. The discharge nurse showed me my chart and the diagnosis (PACs and PVCs..pre-ventricular contractions). All the doctors did was focus on the fact I had been to an herbalist and harp on how dangerous it was (like a nuclear test and strong chemicals are not!)

Now, for my concerns from here. The palpitations became strong after my visit with you on Tuesday, so they were either exacerbated (but not caused) by the pushing on my stomach or by the oil. I hadn't taken any supplements yet. So ... I'm a bit afraid to try the oil again. I even thought my symptoms were worse when I could smell it. I'm also afraid to take the colloidal minerals, because electrolyte imbalance was listed as a possible source of concern, though my electrolytes tested fine. (This also I found out when the discharge nurse reviewed my chart for me.) My palpitations seem to be OK in the morning, but I'm still having them every evening. My TSH was off slightly, but not enough for concern ... this seems to match with what you found. My free T3 was fine, also. So.. from here... I guess I get the Everflex and Thymus glandular from you ... probably no harm (I've taken them before). What about colloidal minerals? Wait until palpitations stop, and then try them? Same with the oil? [I'm a bit nervous.] One person I spoke with said her palpitations were a problem for a month or two ... urgh.

Ans:

Glad you found nothing serious; all that stress at least has told you that you can deal with more than you thought! We had a death in our family last Thursday, and a funeral yesterday afternoon or we would have been at fitness. Your symptoms are probably worse at night because you are (a) most stressed and tired from the entire day and (b) most likely to be dehydrated. Water is the carrier for your electrolytes, so when your fluid level drops so do they. Electrolytes are charged mineral particles that carry the electrical signals in the body. The electrolyte issue that can impact heart function is a dramatic imbalance in sodium and potassium. Your electrolytes being "ok" means that they didn't see that kind of imbalance; the colloidal minerals is a balanced blend that will simply supplement the overall levels and clear up the communication in your body in general. The oil you have will get the energy moving between your head and your body, which is why it may make you feel queasy; you are much more comfortable in your head! When you start moving energy around it opens that area and may be a little intense. Try just putting a drop on the back of your right wrist or the bottom of the arch on the left foot. I do not have the Everflex or Thymus Glandular in stock but will order today.

Q: Gall bladder removed

I hate to bother you… but I have a co-worker that lives in Houston that has had his gallbladder removed and pancreatic cancer. This is the situation as he described it to me….

“The bile duct(s) were re-routed and/or reconstructed so that there is bile drip into intestines.”

If he lived here, I would send him to you with out a doubt… but I was hoping that you would know someone who lived out there who can help him… Please let me know as soon as you can if you know anyone close by and how to get in touch with them, so I can let him know…

Ans:

The description is typical for gall bladder surgery; the liver continues to produce bile, which is critical for distribution of fats in the body; without the gall bladder it simply drips unobstructed into the intestine rather than being distributed as needed by the gall bladder, which acts as a duct. This is why most people who have had a gall bladder removal suffer from chronic diarhhea (the remainder generally have the opposite.

I do phone consultations for my regular consultation fee for an hour. I do not know anyone out there (BSC Students get me your exams so I can refer to you!). Given what he would pay to see a specialist, my rates are worth his airfare or his paying for mine. Remember, I am not a doctor. I cannot treat disease, but I believe the human body can do that on it's own if it's given what it needs.

Q: (continued)

I was hoping that you might know someone through Natures Sunshine that worked the same way you do. He wanted some help with his recovery and to treat his post gallbladder without medication. I will forward your answer to him and see what he says. He used to come out here on a regular basis… I don’t know when or if he will be back or can even travel now… BTW, what is your consultation fee now so I can include that information? Thanks for answering so quickly…

Ans:

My consultation fee is $85.00 for an initial visit, rechecks are 25-65 depending on the time elapsed between visits and the amount of time we need. Most people use a half hour every two-three months, which is 35. Iwould start with lipase to support the gall bladder and herbal CA for general healing. The gall bladder and pancreas are closely related in Ayurvedic medicine, and both can relate to emotional issues concerning joy of living, which may be one reason why pancreatic cancer does not usually respond well to orthodox medical treatments. Since it is also generally a fast-progressing condition, it's a good idea to start supporting the body as quickly as possible, and to stop doing things of any kind that increase physiological or other stresses. There are good airfares on Southwest right now!

Q: Pnuemonia

My daughter has a very mild case of pnumonia, she is very sick and very tired, we tried some strong antibiotics, but it made her violently ill, she is 12 years old, healthy, and never gets sick, i think her body can heal itself, but i am interested in any herbal rememdies, and natural remedies, that will help her recover.

thank you

Ans:

I have to tell you that I'm not a doctor, and can't tell you how to treat diseases. If my kids were having any kind of issues in the lungs, what I would consider is supporting them with mullein, which is traditionally considered nutritive to that type of tissue, and if there were a deep cough I was concerned with I would also use a combination called HCP-X, which Dr. John Christopher developed for use in his patients who had whooping cough and similar concerns. The cough can symptomatically be relieved with a homeopathic cough syrup and if there were any color to the mucous, which indicates an infection present, I would use they Lymph Gland Cleanse formula, which contains a number of herbs documented to posess anti-bacterial properties.

In addition to supplements, I would massage the balls of the feet and the palms of the hands just below the fingers, which contain reflex points for the respiratory system. I would also massage between the ribs, to keep things moving (which minimzes or prevents infection), probably with the "Guardian" oil blend.

All of the items I mentioned can be ordered through the website; if you are in my area I may have them in stock as well.

Kim

Q: Breast Cancer

I'm woried because my mom has a small ball in her arm pit and she went to a check up and they told her that she should go to the hospital for a better look at what was wrong with her but she doesn't want to go. They said to ask the doctor about an ultrasound and she didn't tell us anymore. What are some signals of Breast Cancer? Do people die from it? What are the chances of her having breast cancer? What other info do you have about this? Write as soon as posible Please

Ans:

First, remember that I am not a doctor, and cannot diagnose or treat diseases. Sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you; I am out of town and have limited email access.

The ball under the arm pit is most likely simply a plugged lymph node, which I would first try massaging firmly toward the breast. Ideally, I would use a blend of lemon and Guardian oils in a base of olive or blended massage oil since they tend to especially trigger lymphatic circulation. If it is a lymph node it will probably be a little tender, while tumours are generally not. Cancer is such a problem precisely because the body does not recognize or fight the faulty cells, unlike the normal inflammation indicated by the swollen or blocked node. Lymph Gland Cleanse is a specific herbal blend for that system, and Breast Assured was designed to provide the nutrients essential for that area. (All of these are available through this site). Another possibility would be that the ball is a calcification, which sometimes can be dissolved with adequate magnesium intake. I would eliminate underwire bras and antiperspirants immediately to encourage increased circulation to the area as well.

People do die from untreated breast cancer, though usually much more slowly than from the common treatments! I do know a number of people who have chosen to use herbs and other substances to rebuild the body's immune response, thus stimulating it to successfully fight the disease on its own. Regardless of what the lump may be, I would find someone who can guide you through a good natural health evaluation and can determine which organs and systems may need support if you are not in my area.

Q: newborn in NICU with narrow nasal passages

Hi Kim, I met you at Jill ***'s home when you came to teach us about body systems and muscle testing.

I have a dear friend whose baby is almost 7 days old and in the NICU because she has very narrow nasal passages. She has turned blue a couple of times because she could not breathe. They have been giving her nose drops which have kept the nasal membranes from sticking together so she can nurse and breathe. Now they are weaning her from the drops to steroids in hopes that the parents will be able to take her home.

Anyway, this is a rare thing. They are searching for a plastic surgeon or someone who might be able to help enlarge the nasal passages. They want to know if there is a window of time in which this needs to be done. My friend is working very hard to nurse her baby. The baby (***) nurses very well when she can breathe.

I am hoping you might have some ideas for this family. Do you think cranio-sacral work would be good? Anything you might know would be very appreciated.

Ans:

Craniopathy might be helpful, but hard to access in the hospital. Lymphatic massage is easy, and I would be doing it constantly from the jaw and the base of the skull to thecollarbone. Licorice root supports the adrenals in producing cortin, the body's steroid, which the drugs are mimicing. It can be used topically in an alcohol extract and will be absorbed throught the skin, and can be taken internally by the baby as well as the mom. I would also be giving both large amounts of pantothenic acid, which also suppports the adrenals. Jill can order them for you.

Q: Tiao He during early pregnancy

I have a very important question and I do not know who to ask. I came across your website in Ask Jeeves, so I hope you can give me some much needed information. I am 4 weeks pregnant. 1 to 2 weeks into my pregnancy, before I knew I was pregnant, I did a 10 day Detox program called Tiao He by Natures Sunshine. Now I am scared to death that I have caused harm to the fetus from taking these herbs! I don't know what to do! The label states "See your Doctor before if: you are pregnant or breastfeeding", etc. etc., but I did not know I was pregnant. I was not trying to become pregnant. If you can give me any information as to the dangers of my taking this herb 1 to 2 weeks into pregnancy, I would be most grateful.

Ans:

I would not be remotely concerned. The labeling notice you saw is required by the FDA on all supplements, including herbs. Remember, "herbs" means "plants", so "no Herbs" would also rule out carrots and celery! The more functional your liver was in the early stages, the less likely you are to be sick and the better able your liver will be to do its job of keeping the blood quality adequate for you and your baby. "Tiao He" means "peace and harmony", refering to the liver's job of maintaining balance in the body. Allow yourself some! You may enjoy "Woodstoves and the Swamp Thing", a CD I just recorded as an overall introduction to herbs and body function, and there are several entries in the Q & A [this] section about pregnancy issues. I will also be mailing out a newsletter soon; you may add your address in the mailing list signup area.

Q: Tooth problems

My name is *** and I live in **** Florida. I wanted to see if you could give me some insight into what I can do about some wisdom teeth.
My boyfriend has not had his wisdom teeth taken out yet. We are planning to get that done as soon as we save up the money to pay for it. The teeth had broken through the gums but the back right tooth has been pretty much falling apart and I'm sure its just rotting in his mouth. Recently it has started giving him excruciating pain on that side of his face including his ear. It will probably be a couple of weeks before we are able to get the surgery done to have it/them removed, so are there any herbs or treatments we could use/do to ease the pain, to cleanse or possibly heal the tooth/mouth?
I would appreciate and information you can give me!

Ans:

Black walnut extract mixed with chlorophyll has helped lots of people I hav known with abcessed teeth, swished around in the mouth near the tooth and then swallowed. The facial pain is from the inflammation and possible infection associated with the problem, and may be eased by rubbing tei-fu oil or otion on the jawline, and by draining the lymph glands under the jaw with a downward, milking motion which will allow the infection to drain and be filtered appropriately. I would also be taking the Lymph Gland Cleanse HY formula to support the extra effort needed by the lymphatic and immune systems under this kind of stress. Good luck.

Q: Infant ear swollen and red

Hi Kim, I am truly a believer of natural remedies. My mom and dad raised us without a lot a medicine and [when] we did get sick the first thing mom would say is, you need a good cleanout (she'd give us aloe vera) and boy did it work! Now my 19 month old baby girl was born with the same exact holes in her ears that I have. To help give you a visual, you the flat part just in front of the ear, well I was told because we had indian on both my grandparents sides, that's where the holes in front of the ear stems from (its hereditary). When I was younger, the hole on my right ear would become infected and swell up with puss and I would have to have it lanced to drain all the puss out. Finally my mom took me to an ENT doctor and he suggested sugery to remove the core and since then I haven't had any problems. Now I'm not trying to claim anything for my baby, and I'm not sure what to do for her, she wants to nurse more often than usual probably because the sucking has deal with the ear pain (I guess) but I did press her ear a little and puss began to oose out, after that I took a cotton swab with melaleuca oil and put it on that part of her ear. I was wondering though is there a safe way to draw the puss out without furter irritating and hurting her ear, because she's constantly grabbing at it, and it hurts me soooooo bad to see her suffering. Thanks.

Ans:

NSP has a traditional drawing salve called "Black Ointment" that should be effective for drawing out any hardened matter from the spot. I would also gently "milk" the lymph nodes under the ear while she is nursing to encourage the matter to be handled by the normal channels; I use a blend of guardian, lemon, and roman chamomile oils in a general massage oil base for lymphatic massage for my children. All of these can be ordered through this website.

Q: Will vitamins help?

Ans:

In most cases, yes. Frankly the very best form of vitamins is in the fresh fruits and vegetables they were placed in to begin with! As second best, I would use liquids as a first preference, capsules or chewable tablets second, and regular tablets third choice. The major issue with tablets is that most commercial vitamins, like you would buy at a grocery or drug store, are actually in a base of coal tar, a toxic petroleum by-product. Some companies also hyper-compress their tablets, especially if they contain starches and chalk, to keep them from crumbling or "dusting" the inside of the bottle. German studies many years ago showed that absorption of vitamins is increased almost 800 % when they are consumed in conjunction with plants (i.e. herbs), which is why Nature's Sunshine uses a base of compatibly powdered herbs for all of their vitamin products, including the children's chewables. Most companies use corn syrup. Also consider a whole food source, such as Juice Plus, in lieu of a traditional Vitamin or mineral supplement for the easiest assimilation. Call or email me if the website link doesn't work to order.

Q: 84 yr old brother incontinence

Is there something that you can suggest for him to take or do?

Our son *** who is a Chiropractor in Colorado suggested that *** go to a local Chiropractor for adjustment of his lower back. Also frequent massage might help.

Ans:

He could try Uva Ursi as a supplement, and I agree with *** that adjustments would probably help. He should also look at his water quality, which affects kidney stress, and at his sugar intake, which increases acidity and irritates the uretheter and bladder linings and causes adrenal stress, triggering more frequent urinary urges.

Q: Acid Reflux

I have been meaning to ask you about Acid Reflux. I have had problems with Acid Reflux for about two or three years and it seems to get worse the longer I sing. Most opera singers have "flux" in some form due to the constant pressure on our stomach when we sing. I take Nexium and it helps but I wonder if you can think of anything else. I hate to be dependant on Nexium. It seems to be a miracle drug for most singers but I don't want to take it for the next 20 years. I am careful about eating at night, I avoid acidic foods. My ENT told me to avoid mints and gum as well as mint tea but that other herbal teas are fine. I test REALLY strongly for mint tea, though. Any thoughts?

Ans:

The reflux is a matter of positioning, and you're right, it is impacted by the constant pressure on the diaphragm from singing. It's usually initiated, though, by a tendency (from survival or otherwise) to be "nice" to everyone no matter what, which results in holding the breath when you are tense, forcing the stomach up. There is a dandelion flower essence massage oil [...] I am sending that is helpful used on and around the diaphragm. When you are feeling reflux, you can put the fingers just under the sternum and pull down while you forcefully blow out through the mouth, putting pressure on the stomach from above and dropping it back through the diaphragm. It's actually easier to have [someone] do this for you, since you most likely have a perfectly healthy desire not to inflict pain on yourself, which may keep you from being able to actually move anything!

You are wise to want to avoid the Nexium, since several studies recently have determined that it significantly increases the risk of pneumonia; apparently the normal acidity of the stomach and diaphragm inhibits bacterial growth in addition to making it possible to digest protein, which is what the stomach exists for. Mint increases the circulation in the stomach and heart, which is why it may instigate heartburn, but which is also why you might test for it. Poor circulation in the digestive system will make the entire system a little sluggish. The best quick soother would probably be licorice root, which acts as a general anti-inflammatory by supporting the adrenal glands and is classed as a mucilant, coating and cooling mucous membranes. If you can stand the taste of black licorice you can either open a capsule into your mouth and suck on the powder (best) or drink licorice tea, both of which should help.

Q: Skin outbreak after sunburn

Hi Kim,
I am ***'s dad. I was very interested in the work you did with ***. That very week, I had guests, a friend and her dad..she is a chiropractor and her dad is really knowledgeable about alternative remedies after a life of seeking them out. That is interesting since both of his parents were doctors and owned a small hospital.
My problem is that a few months ago my previously clear skinned nose broke out with some acne or rosacia. I thought acne at first. But it has hung in there for months now. Every day nearly there is a new bump or redness that looks like the skin is infected. It is sore to touch. I have had bumps develop as far from the nose as my cheeks directly under the center of my eyes. My family doctor put me on Metrogel which oes not seem to be working. I have tried acne creams...which help somewhat...but so far nothing seems to be working. My friend suggested that since I have very congested sinuses, especially the upper cavities, that maybe there is an infection going on in the sinuses and the breaking out might be a migration to the surface.
The symptoms for rosacia make that a possibility, but I am not convinced yet of that. I think the event that started this was a sunburn, but that could be a coincidence...who knows.
I read of a remedy that uses an aspirin paste as a mask for 20 minutes a day and the people who mentioned it on a forum web site I read were very excited at the results. I have decided to give that a try for a week or so just to see.
Anyway, that is all I can really think of to tell about this. If you have any ideas I would really appreciate it. I have just about resigned myself to have some node issue for the rest of my life! That is really not a very pleasant thought at all.
Thanks much,

Ans:

The aspirin paste would work as an astringent, meaning it would draw matter to itself and to the surface, which is the only thing I can think of as a basis for its effect. An internal infection can be drawn to the surface of the skin, or perhaps more accurately, migrate to the surrounding tissue, so the sinus infection may be related. Without trying to diagnose anything (that would be illegal; I am not a doctor) the presence of the other infection would indicate a sluggish lymphatic system, which would make it likely that an infection could remain and become systemic. Massaging the lymph nodes in the neck downward with a Guardian/Lemon massage blend may help.

Your biggest clue is that it was triggered by a sunburn. Exposure to large amounts of sunlight can provide excessive amounts of vitamin D, triggering the liver to flush the bile ducts. Since the skin is the largest eliminative organ it often "dumps" in response to liver cleansing, especially if the other "chimneys" aren't as functional as they should be, which would go along with the sinus congestion since that's the chimney immediately before the skin. Drinking lots of water will help flush things through; sugar will accelerate bacterial growth so should be minimised or eliminated.

Hope this is a start for you.

Q: Morning Sickness

I have a client that has come to me 4 months pregnant. She is very toxic as she has morning sickness 24/7. She had only had a b.m. every other day before becoming pregnant-

I have suggested daily juicing with organic veggies and lots of good water..oh and flax seed oil. She cannot keep much down and I thought that this would help nurish that baby and detox her naturally.

My question is what NSP products could I suggest, if any, to aid her? I am nervous consulting with a pregnant woman.

Thank you for your suggestions.

Ans:

Best bet to start is the Red Raspberry liquid blend, which she can just cover the bottom of a mug with and add warm water for a tea she can sip. It's a classic for morining sickness, as is ginger sipped as a tea. The raspberry blend provides iron and flavanoids to help with absorption of it as well in addition to a good range of other nutrients, and may act as a mild laxative since its primary area of action is the small intestine. Anemia is also a cause of constipation in many women. Your dietary suggestions are good, but the oil may be hard to keep down.she may do better to soak the seeds (or any kind of seed or nut) overnight in pineapple juice to soften and acivate the enzymes and get the oil in with the fiber as well.

Q: Heel Pain

Hi Kim,

This is ***. You have met with me and *** for the past two summers that you have been in Boone, NC.
I hope you and your family are doing well. I am having pain on the bottom of my feet, especially near the heel. My right heel hurts worse than the left. And the pain is especially bad first thing in the morning. I have done some research on this and I am thinking it might be Plantar Fasciitis. Is there anything that you would recommend doing for this heel pain? Do you think it would be Plantar Fasciitis or something else? I have been dealing with this for about 2 months now and instead of getting better it is only getting worse. Any advice you have to offer would be appreciated. Thank you so much. I hope things are going well for you.

Ans:

I would add some alfalfa capsules to get your overall mineral level up. Plantar Fascitis is literally "inflammation of the fascia in the heel" so that sounds right. Sugar and protein (especially meat) will make it worse since they increase acidity; pineapple and black cherry juices may help.
Doing some lymphatic massage, rubbing up all around the anklebone, may help, as may clary sage oil rubbed into the area (mix it with some of the massage oil base first).

Q: Sore wrist / thumb

For 18 1/2 years I had a physical job that required me to lift heavy objects 4-5 hours per day. I racked up a few sore spots such as both my wrists. I left the job 1 1/2 years ago to pursue my dream as an artist and now, right before the holiday season, my right wrist is beginning to act up. It is right below where the thumb meets the wrist( and goes up into the thumb) It feels inflammed. I use the hand for drawing, painting, and glazing and can't afford to wait several weeks without its use.
I'm trying arnica, but is there something you could reccommend to facilitate the healing?
Thanx.

Ans:

I would try the Chinese formula IF-C, which is to "clear the heat" or inflammation. I've had great results resolving old injuries flaring up.

Q: Vaginosis causing problem in getting pregnant?

I am a 21 year old female that has had bacterial vaginosis off and on for a year now. I am trying to concieve for a couple of months now and I was wondering if the bacterial vaginosis play a part in me not getting pregnant? I also heard that by inserting acidophilus capsules in the vagina will help get rid of the bacterial vaginosis is this true?

Ans:

Any infection needs the body's attention, and could prevent you from taking on the added stress of a pregnancy. The acidophilus capsules would help only if the problem is primarily yeast, rather than bacterial in nature, remembering, though, that antibiotic treatment for bacterial infections can cause the former. I would not insert anything that's going to stay into the vagina with a bacterial infection present, since a warm moist environment is perfect for bacterial multiplication. I would consider (apple cider) vinegar and garlic douches, since bacteria don't like an acid environment and garlic has documented antibacterial properties. I'd also build the immune and reproductive systems after finding the underlying weak systems. You might find the HERbs booklet helpful for general information on the effect your feminine products might be having and other insights into women's health and reproduction.

Q: Young child with dental caries / questionable mole

My daughter is 3. When she was about 22 months, we discovered severe dental caries in her mouth. When the pediatric dentist saw her, he said she just about had a cavity in every tooth. Her molars were particularly bad--malformed and full of dark spots. So she now has 3 caps on molars--another is scheduled for January 4th. Her top front teeth all have brown spots on them, and obvious holes in places. Anyway, I have been brushing her teeth with non-flouride, xylitol toothpaste. And giving her Spry xylitol mints. I don't feel totally confident in my muscle testing skills, but I suspect she could use minerals due to her dislike of most raw vegetables. I know *** used black walnut with her little one. Do you have any ideas? *** (my daughter) still nurses at night and sometimes in the day. The dentist thinks she may have strep mutans...I have only had one small cavity in my life. Maybe she got it from my husband. My other two children did not have this problem.

My second question is about my 8 yr. old son. There is a different looking mole on his forehead. Actually, the dental hygenist noticed it the other day. Something about dentists in our family right now I guess. It is irregular shaped, slightly raised, and kind of two-toned in color. I am wondering if you have any ideas about this. I could take him to the MD, but am hesitant to subject him to a biopsy if I could get rid of it another way. I am thinking of trying a blood root tincture. What do you think? I couldn't find blood root at the store to test him with it.

Ans:

The lack of minerals is a definite possibility, though if she has been nursing, you are probably also deficient. Black walnut is a natural source of flouride, in a form which can not be taken to excess and is not toxic, as stannous flouride (the kind added to water and toothpaste) can be. Ironically, an excess of that flouride can cause discoloration and mottling of teeth. Trinity springs water is also high in natural fouride, and can be used as a supplement if you desire. You might try adding NSP colloidal minerals to water; they are prepared in glycerin, so they taste sweet and are easily absorbed. I also like NSP Herbal Trace Minerals. Most children can swallow capsules by the time they are three without difficulty. Vegetables can also be chopped finely or pureed in a food processor and added to soups, breads, smoothies, etc. Kelp can replace salt in seasoning.

Caries are common in children who tend to nurse throughout the night, just as they are in babies who are put to bed with a bottle. The sugars in the milk remain in the mouth much longer when the baby is lying down and/or sleeping while they nurse. In that case, the problem should not exist in the adult teeth. Discoloration tends to be the result of issues during the formative time of the teeth, including the gestation period; medication taken during pregnancy is sometimes the issue.

If you had not noticed the mole yourself, I assume it is quite small. Generally anything smaller than the diameter of a pencil eraser is not something to take action on. Be aware that blood root is caustic and may cause pain and scarring, which is why it is not commonly available. If his immune system tests well I would not be concerned; if not I would support the immune functions and let the body handle things in its own way. Follow your instincts. Remember, you are always free to do what you believe is best, regardless of what the MD may suggest; you may choose not to have a biopsy or removal but may feel better having another opinion.

Q: Teifu in massage oil

I gave my brother some teifu in some massage oil. He called me and wanted more because he used it all for his head aches. I asked him where his headaches are. He said they were in the temples. He is currently taking a antidepression medicine. I told him that the headache was a result of his liver being overtaxed. He said he hadn't taken it for a few days and had actually felt better. (health wise, I am not sure mentally) I told him to use vinegar and soda to clean with. I am not sure what to tell him for laundry detergent. They are on a very limited income and live in a small town. He is still learning about muscle testing.

He lives in Idaho and so I cannot muscle test him. I was listening to your tapes on wound up and you talked about a few herbs that help people deal with depression. I know you cannot diagnose, but can you tell me what I can suggest to him?

Ans:

The tei fu helps more than just the headache symptom; by using it on the temple he is stimulating the liver reflex points as well.Milk Thistle Combination is a good general support for the liver, especially when there has been a chemical buildup from envronmental poisons or drugs, even the prescription kind. Dark green foods and dark red/purple foods like beets, red cabbage, and dark plums also support liver function. Balanced B Complex will help support a depleted nervous system. Remind him that sugar is the worst enemy of his nervous system.

Laundry can be washed with baking soda, also. NSP make Sunshine Concentrate Cleaner, which not only can be used for layndry, dishes, and such, but which actually helps to break down chemical residue from former cleaners. There is also a 'Depressaquel" homeopathic which can be used when symptoms arise.

Q: Urinary problems

I know you are not a miracle worker, but I was wondering if you had any ideas for this dilemma.

My grandma does not live near me so I a cannot muscle test her. I wish I could though, because she believed me about muscle testing.

Anyway, From what I understand from my mother that my Aunt was concerned that my Grandma was getting up a lot in the night to go to the bathroom. My mom did say that is when she drinks her water. My aunt told Grandma to go talk to the Dr. about it. Well, he gave her a pill to stop her from urinating. CRAZY. My Grandma has a history of bladder infections. She took one and after that could not go to the bathroom on her own. They finally put a catheter in her and emptied 1 GALLON of urine!!! This was about 3 weeks ago and she still needs a catheter to go to the bathroom. Do you have any ideas?

Ans:

I think I would try the Chinese Kidney Activator, for a "stressed water" constitution. Since it has been reformulated it now tests primary to the medulla, which would be responsble for instigating the bladder "trigger" anyway.

Q: Swallowing pills

Dad doesn't swallow the tabets very well. Do you have any suggestions for making them go down easier?

Ans:

It's usually a magnesium deficiency that causes challenges with swallowing. Try smashing up a magnesium tablet or opening a magnesium complex capsule and mixing it with yogurt or aplesauce-it has almost no taste of its own. Wait about 10 minutes and see if it's any easier.

Q: Miscarriage

I am 42 and have five children. I have had two miscarriages in the past year. Both happened about six weeks from my previous period. Is there something I can take that will help maintain the pregnancy should I become pregnant again?

Ans:

Miscarriages are generally the result of a: an abnormal fetus that would not have been fully viable anyway; b: excessive stress, resulting in adrenal hormone triggers to abort; c: a latent infection, usually strep related; or d: a real lack of trace minerals, resulting in a complete lack of uterine and other muscle tone and pituitary malfunction. I would not let people tell you that you're "just too old" to have another baby! Traditionally, NF-X formula was used by Dr. Christopher for the problem, which is interesting since it contains herbs to support reproductive function, herbs generally used to reduce stress, and golden seal, traditionally used to fight strep and other serious infections. Skeletal Strength and Herbal Trace Minerals would be good to build in general, especially important after miscarriage. Best wishes.

Q: Labor pains

First, thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and being willing to teach and listen. My 18 month old fell flat on his face and put his tooth through his bottom lip. Thanks to lobelia and bio water, hardly any swelling, and no scarring. After two days one could harldy even tell that this trama happened. It was wonderful. (When he first did it I had an herbs for kids, valerian root extract I gave to both of us and I put capsicum on it.) I was very logical about the whole thing. Thank you

Now, my question. I was wondering about what herbs I can take to help me with labor pains. I go all natural, and I want to be in better control, this time than last. And I know some of that is mental, and working with Jill and taking some flower essences would help. But, I was wondering what I could do during it all.

Also, I have strep B. XX and I talked about it and I am going to find out the hospital's policy about it. But, if the infant does get sick, what I can I do?

Ans:

With strep B the policy will almost certainly be to put you on IV antibiotics, which will probably cause the baby to have thrush. Start taking acidophilus and bifidophilus as soon as you get home to replenish some good bacteria, and open a little into the baby's mouth as well. I have seen estimates that as much as 80% of the population harbours latent beta strep,so it's not neccesarily a crisis. (It's also true that the most likely place to contract it is in a hospital!) I personally use the IN-X combination when I have reason to believe that I may have active strep in my system.

You could begin now to take the 5-W combination to strengthen the uterine muscles, thereby making your labor more efficient. Traditional use is to start with 5 capsules per day 5 weeks before your due date, building up to 12 per day for the last 3 weeks. ( If you don't have 5 weeks left, start with 6-8 and work up by a couple a day). I did this with my daughter and my first contraction was 70 seconds long. No messing around! It also helps to finish out the bottle at 6-8 per day after the baby is born to restore uterine tone and help return it to normal size. Make sure your calcium intake is also adequate, since it controls muscle contractions. Best wishes!

Q: Yellow tint to skin

What causes a yellow tint to the skin? (her palms are orangey yellowish) And the whites of her eyes are a little yellow.

Ans:

Yellow skin indicates liver stress - I would start with bayberry, drink lemon juice and liquid chlorophyll, and eat lots of dark red (beets, dark cherries & plums, red cabbage) and green (spinach, collards, kale) foods. I would also be really conscious of environmental stresses, especially commercial cleaning agents and such. The breath and gas indicate poor digestion, but that can also lead back to poor hepatic function. If she wants quick relief I would also consider coffee enemas to flush the liver.

Q: Prednisone

My daughter has asthme and has been on Prednisone for 1 year now. Do you have any suggestions how to wean her off? She was 120 lbs. and now 190- with swelling and stretch marks; (she) is 17 years old.

Ans:

Licorice root supports the adrenal glands, which are seriously compromised by steroids. Licorice has also historically been used for respiratory distress. I would also consider pantothenic acid in huge amounts; it is not stored by the body but is a critical B-vitamin for physiological stress response. Beyond that, I would look to JP-X combination to help the body regulate fluid levels and rebuild compromised organs. Remember that I'm not a doctor, so I can't prescribe anything for diseases or advise on drug issues, but anything the body has become dependent on needs to be removed slowly!

Q: Ovarian Cyst

My 17-year-old niece recently went to the doctor because she was having abdominal pain. She was diagnosed with an ovarian cyst. The doctor recommended she go on birth control pills to take care of the problem. She would like to know if there are any natural alternatives that would heal this condition.

Ans:

A cyst is essentially an internal pimple-a fluid filled sac of waste matter. Cleaning up the interior is what will resolve it; the pill simply stops the normal hormone cycle. I have had a number of clients who found that their cysts disappeared when they began a balancing nutritional program. She might try the Red Clover Blend liquid and the C-X formula to help support her hormone and blood quality needs. I would also massage the ankles (reflex points for female organs) with Helichrysm oil.

Q: Bleeding Fibroid

My gyno discovered a 4x5cm submucosal fibroid in my uterus early this year. At 46 my periods have been getting more erratic and it seems within the last 6 mos. that the fibroid has only added to my bleeding problem. Now both during my period and about 2 weeks later I have another bleeding session, with some days of 'flooding'. This past March I became anemic because of the problem, but after receiving an IV of Iron and getting plenty of rest during these 'periods', I've learned to cope with it. Of course my gyno put me on birthcontrol (which I am no longer taking) and recommended a surgeon, whom I saw and he wants to do a hysterectomy on me. Without insurance to cover the cost, and after doing further research I have decided to postpone (indefinately) getting the surgery. I've seen a homeopath and he gave me sulfer tincture, which I have been taking for a few weeks now. But I have also made some diet changes (i.e. no 'hormone' meat, more veggies, no coffee or chocolate, other herbal suppliments) but I was wondering if you have any specific suggestions for herbs. Your name was given to me by my sister-in-law in Melbourne, Fl.. She has a friend over there whom you were able to help. I would appreciate any suggestions you may have.

Ans:

Fibroids are relatively easy to manage (eliminate) but the "right" herbs really vary from person to person; for mine I needed large amounts of black cohosh and dong quai, but another client who recently had 3 large fibroids disappear in 6 weeks needed red clover blend and lymphatic support, nothing hormonal at all. It sounds like you are making some good changes relative to healthy hormones, but I would also encourage you to switch to all-cotton, non-chlorine bleached feminine hygeine products, like natracare or a similar brand. Chlorine and dioxin, bith used in paper products, are known hormone disruptors. A fibroid is essentially a dumping ground for matter the body can't process normally; make sure your bowels and kidneys are getting adequate support. Use lymphatic massage in the groin to increase circulation and detox processes. Massage the area around the ankle bones for reflexlogy support. Hemoglobin can be quickly replaced by taking liquid chlorophyll along with Nature's Sunshine iron and citrus bioflavanoids. I would use 2 tablespoons of chlorophyll in a large glass of water along with 2 each of the iron and bioflavanoids between meals each day. Chlorophyll also helps flush waste matter out of the body, so there is a double benefit.

Q: Ringworm

My husband's ringworm used to come and go, but now his condition is chronic and he is hardly ever completely free from the rash. He has used black walnut, pau d'arco, and over-the-counter creams in the past, but these have not healed the condition. Would you please let me know what else he can try?

Ans:

I would use the Natures Sunshine BP-X (Dr Chistophers) formula to help get his blood quality where it needs to be, and use cider vinegar topically on the area. You can saturate a gauze pad and tape it on- the organism can't tolerate the high acid level.

Q: Organic groceries / yeast infection

Thanks for answering my questions on the phone. However, I want to clarify something. When I had mentioned living on a limited income, I was thinking that one has to eat completely organic, use organic soap, shampoo, and laundry detergent, and drink reverse osmosis water to be completely healthy. I appreciate you mentioning that we can just start with whole grains and beans. It can be a little overwhelming at times in this imperfect world. The lady that used $30. on groceries, what was her fresh vegetable and fruit source??

XX said to test for yeast infection, you can test under the left ear and then test under the belly button. If they are both weak, then there is yeast present, right? Well what if the ear is weak and the belly button is strong?

Also, sometimes, my belly button will be sore to the touch, XX couldn't quite remember if that might be related to yeast or somehting else.

Ans:

I think something important to remember is that we ALL are living on a limited income. We may have different limits to our money and our time, but we all are constantly choosing how to spend both. Every good decision we make leads us to the next. People eat less whole food than refined food, and are full longer. We are counseled to have gardens, which provide inexpensive fresh produce, especially if we are sharing with each other. If you are living on dried foods you can sprout seeds, beans, and grains, which provides excellent fresh nutrition. A pound of organic alfalfa seeds will make dozens of gallons of sprouts for less than $10.00.

The test point for systemic (i.e. in the bloodstream) yeast is under the left ear. The navel is the point for yeast overgrowth in the gut. It is possible to have one without the other. Since yeast is normally present even in a healthy body, it's not really an "infection", though it may cause discomfort. It is strictly an overgrowth which normally responds well to diet changes.

Q: Scoliosis

Hi Kim,

I think I'm doing well since seeing you last fall at your mom's house (breast cancer survivor), but found out today at the pediatrician's that my daughter, *** , 14, has scoliosis. We had already figured this out and asked for confirmation.

My question is this: I hope you know about this area of health and that there is something I can do nutritionally to support *** and help her body correct itself. Can you give me some help or can I call you?? She is still premenstrual by the way, if it makes a difference. 5 ft. 2 in, but very thin, only 84 pounds.

Ans:

It's not uncommon for premenstrual girls to be diagnosed with scoliosis; my daughter was. The concern is that when estrogen levels change significantly, it can accelerate the rate of curvature. I would give her NSP regular calcium tablets, and make sure she gets plenty of calcium in her diet-primarily from dark, leafy greens, like collards, spinach, etc. I would also gently support her glandular system, probably with Monthly Maintenance, and use evening primrose oil as a source of prostaglandins to ensure adequate and stable hormone levels. Being so thin indicates that she may have some assimilation challenges, and it's vital that she gets enough fatty acids, so look at organic nuts, oils and seeds in addition to cultured dairy like sour cream or whole milk yogurt.

Q: Xylitol

This discussion is very interesting to me primarily the bit about the calcium absorption. My son was evaluated while still in the newborn nursery for high calcium levels which was causing tremors - this resolved without further incidence. His childhood has however been plagued with febrile seizures as an infant, learning disability primarily concentration issues, and an overgrowth of calcium - causing a calcium buildup - of his teeth. Each of these issues are either directly or indirectly related to the bodies use of calcium yet I cannot get any health care professional to make a connection. I am wondering if Xylitol might be the answer or at least a partial answer to our problem here. I am interested in if any of you have had any similar experiences or any suggestions for helping with this as I feel in my gut that there is a connection here.

Ans:

It may be a small part of a solution. Calcium buildup is not actually a calcium problem, but is more related to magnesium and phosphorus levels, among other things. I was diagnosed at 12 with osteoporosis after I broke three bones in five months, and after two surgeries for calcium spur removals that they never did connect to the other problem. The only suggestion was to limit my intake of foods containing calcium, the standard protocol at that time for osteoporosis at Johns Hopkins, where I was ultimately diagnosed. Now, of course, it would be exactly the opposite. When I began studying natural health 23 years ago I made the connection; I test for four times the standard ratio of calcium to magnesium. This was apparently in part a hereditary tendency, since my grandmother and mom both had similar problems. I addressed it with a variety of diet and supplement approaches which were completely successful; I am 47 and a recent bone density test showed me having "high bone density for a 32 year old woman", the age calibrated into the machine at the time.

Q: Migraines

I would like to ask a question for my friend. Can you help for migraine? She has a very stressful job, therefore she has migraine attacks 3-4 times in a week. Could you recommend any medicine or herbs? If you could help her, I would be so happy:))) P.S. Also she told me that her estrogen level was either high or low. I forgot which one she said.

Ans:

Migraines are often triggered by liver stress, which also impacts hormone production. Herbs and other naturopathic remedies are usually able to strengthen liver response quickly and effectively. Many of my clients have found their migraines cease to be a problem when they work to improve their health with a targeted program, and can often prevent full onset when they feel the imbalance coming on. Check the Q&A section for some of my clients' experiences.

Q2:

Thank you very much for your answer. I am the one who visited you today with ***. Actually, I have migraine, too but not severe and often. I am going to take artichoke pills because I know it helps the liver. My real problem is I dont ovulate! How long does usually it take to get back regular ovulation? My husband want me to visit you as soon as possible, but honestly I dont want to get pregnant very soon. Also I have got an appointment from specialist (Dr. ***). What would you recommend me to do at this point?

 Ans2:

Your liver is responsible for beginning all hormone production, and there are lots of other stresses that can suppress ovulation. (Visiting me won't necessarily get you pregnant immediately!) A specialist will look specifically at hormone levels, and use synthetic hormones to manipulate them, but will not look at other organs. That is not their job. What I do is help you learn what is going on in the whole body, and the balance between the body, the mind, and the feelings. All have to be working together to be really "healthy" Artichoke is a bitter herb, which will help to purge the liver, but not to build it if that is what is needed

Q: Mononucleosis

I was referred to you by my friend, ***. I live in Orlando and am wondering if you ever come to the Central Florida area to provide your body system counseling. My daughter was diagnosed with mononucleosis yesterday and I would love to have your counsel for her.

Ans:

I don't have imminent plans to be in Orlando. For now, really watch sugar intake, as that will really stress the adrenals and drop energy further; also keep her moving as much as possible to keep the lymphatics working. There are a couple of Q&A sections and an article about mono on my site. Remember, I am not a doctor, and cannot treat diseases. Your body, though, will take care of just about anything if you support it properly. My daughter had mono a couple of years ago; she and most of the people I have worked with are back on track in a week or so, and usually completely themselves in about two.

Q: Epiglottis flap

My neighbor's epiglottis flap is not functioning & when he eats the food goes into his lungs. Kim, do you have any suggestions to get his flap to flap normally? He is nourished via tubes into his stomach.

Ans:

He needs to get his minerals up to get some tone back into his muscles, which he could easily do with colloidal minerals mixed with his feeding solution, if he is willing to do that. The other thing that has helped some of my clients with feeding tubes has been to mix some proactazyme (digestive enzymes) with the solution to help them actually use the nutrients in their food. You might also suggest massaging the area to increase circulation, thereby increasing function, and raising his upper body when he is being fed if he is currently 'eating' lying down.

Q: Toothpaste

how much scarier can life get from the simple things? i remember how my grandma used baking soda to bursh her teeth with and peroxide to brighten them. i am really trying to pick up the memories of the "old fashion way" of doing things. when it comes to cooking and baking i do 90% of it all from scratch and i am increasing the size of my veggie garden. between pesticides and imported produce from other countries who deficate where they harvest i have been turned off of so many store bought items. lack of money right now makes it hard to purchase true organic foods and i sometimes feel i need to buy a rooster and a chicken and learn how to do my own eggs as well.

question, are you or were you in the medical field? i couldn't remember if you were a nurse or not. i know someone on the site is i'm sure, but i remember a past conversation on iron and the proper supplements (ie the cereal experiment, gross). do the flintstone vitamins give the proper source of iron? i do understand the difference between the two, labels just don't always spell out what is good for you and what is not. i know my son has a lot of me in him and i was enemic taking the true iron supplements (wasn't fun) not flintstones. i hope flintstones are a good source for him since he shows some signs of how i was as a child and being enemic. he eats very well w/raw veggies. not to mention he loves them frozen over all. gross, but that is his choice, don't cook them just pull it out of the freezer and his happy.

thanks for the imput! i do use appreciate all the info passed along.

Ans:

The older ways do work-I am working on a book called "Flu Soup and Ginger Baths". *** I am not in the medical field, I am a consulting body systems counselor, trained in herbs, flower essences, homeopathics and the like. I focus on restoring health rather than fighting disease. My website (www.kimwelborn.com) has a big question/answer section that includes lots of folk and natural remedies.

I don't know the source of iron for flintstones, but they, like all commercial vitamins, are in a base of coal tar, which is a petroleum by-product. If he is eating lots of raw vegetables he may already be getting what he needs; sometimes anemia is not from a lack of iron but an inability to assimilate it; I would be giving him lots of (maple or fruit-sweetened only) whole milk yogurt to make sure his gut flora are producing enough B-12 for him. If you do still feel a need to give him a vitamin, I would use the Herbasaurs children's vitamin on my website.
